The Warriors may have dodged the harshest part of the NBA’s early schedule reveal, but only just.
Golden State were left off opening night for the second time in the past six years, a small but unmistakable sign that the league no longer treats them as an automatic centerpiece. Still, Stephen Curry kept them from slipping any further, because the Warriors did land one of the sport’s biggest showcases: Christmas Day.
Golden State will host Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets in the final game of a five-match Christmas slate. The other games feature the San Antonio Spurs at the New York Knicks, the Miami Heat at the Boston Celtics, LeBron James and the Philadelphia 76ers visiting his former team in the Los Angeles Lakers, and the Oklahoma City Thunder at the Minnesota Timberwolves.
That will extend the Warriors’ Christmas streak to 14 straight appearances. They have not missed the holiday since 2012. Last year they beat the Dallas Mavericks 126-116, though they dropped their previous two Christmas matchups, including a 120-114 loss to Denver in 2023.
The opening night stage, though, belongs to others. The league’s first game of the season is Detroit at Boston, followed by James making his 76ers debut against the reigning champion Knicks. The night wraps with a Western Conference Finals rematch between the Thunder and Spurs in San Antonio.
Golden State will open their season the next night, October 21, against the revamped Lakers, who rebuilt around star guards Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves this summer.
The schedule shift fits a larger trend. The Warriors’ only other opening night absence in the previous five years came after they missed the playoffs in 2024, a reminder that their grip on marquee status has loosened.
For years, Curry and the dynasty around him made Golden State must-see TV. That era still carries weight, but it no longer guarantees the league’s biggest stage.
It also sharpens the spotlight on what comes next for the franchise. If the Warriors can’t identify another star to carry the load after Curry, the future starts to look a lot different. Fans already saw a rough version of that late last season, when the team went 27 straight games without Jimmy Butler and Curry.
With Butler and young wing Moses Moody set to be out through Christmas, there’s real uncertainty around what Golden State will look like by the time the Nuggets come to town on the league’s biggest regular-season day.
