Yaxel Lendeborg has grabbed most of the attention around the Warriors in summer league, and for good reason. His strong play has created real buzz and made it look like a major role could be waiting for the 11th overall pick next season.
But while Lendeborg has been stealing the spotlight, Lajae Jones has quietly started to make his own case.
Jones, the 54th overall pick in last month’s draft, had a rough opening stretch at the California Classic. In three games at Chase Center, the 6-foot-7 wing averaged 3.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists in just under 19 minutes per game, while shooting 22.2% from the field, 14.3% from 3-point range and 33.3% from the free-throw line. He looked tentative and nowhere near ready for NBA minutes.
That picture has changed in Las Vegas.
With Will Richard out, Jones got the start Thursday against the New York Knicks and made the most of it. He finished with 13 points, four rebounds and three steals, and posted a plus-19 in 25 minutes. He also teamed up with Lendeborg for a highlight alley-oop that showed off the kind of athletic upside that made him appealing in the first place.
Jones has now averaged 11 points, 3.8 rebounds and nearly a steal in less than 18 minutes over four games in Las Vegas. He’s shooting 51.5% from the floor, 36.4% from deep and a perfect 5-for-5 at the line.
That kind of turnaround has made him a name worth watching as the Warriors sort out their roster over the next few weeks. Jones was initially viewed as a possible draft-and-stash candidate, but the 22-year-old may have done enough to put himself in the conversation for a two-way deal.
There’s also a path to the main roster as a cheap second-round rookie contract, though that would depend on what happens with more experienced players in free agency and where Golden State stands financially.
For now, Jones gets one more chance to build on the momentum when the Warriors face the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday, with the winner moving on to the Summer League Championship Game.
