The Golden State Warriors are still trying to finish off their roster in free agency, but one of their reported targets may have just slipped a little further away.
Kelly Olynyk has been tied to Golden State as an unsigned veteran big man, yet the 35-year-old was recently spotted in France working out with the San Antonio Spurs after finishing last season there. That alone would have been worth noting. Then the Spurs posted a video of the session, and Olynyk was visible in the clip alongside Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, Carter Bryant, De'Aaron Fox, Harrison Barnes and Tobias Harris.
That raised the obvious question: was Olynyk simply invited in for a workout, or does this point to something more permanent in San Antonio? The Spurs do have one open roster spot, but they also signed former Pacers guard Taleon Peter to a training camp deal on Friday, which could set up a battle for the 15th roster spot.
There was also a wrinkle in the social media discussion around the video. A post from SpursRΞPORTΞR noted that “Kelly Olynyk was on the Spurs roster for the 2025-26 season after San Antonio acquired him from the Washington Wizards in July 2025.” The same post also said, “However, Olynyk's contract expired at the end of the 2025-26 season,…”
For Golden State, the bigger issue may be that this is another possible free-agent target drifting elsewhere. Jake Fischer linked the Warriors to Olynyk again on Tuesday during his Bleacher Report live stream, but the video from San Antonio suggests the Spurs are still very much in the picture.
It would also fit a frustrating summer trend for the Warriors. They’ve spent years chasing major names in trades and coming up short, and now that pattern has carried into free agency, where they still haven’t signed a rival player and are mostly bringing back the same group.
The list of misses already includes LeBron James, despite Golden State’s long pursuit of the superstar forward, and Anfernee Simons, who chose the Philadelphia 76ers instead. Olynyk could be the next name on that list if the Spurs are indeed keeping him in the fold. He averaged fewer than nine minutes in 42 games last season and did not crack San Antonio’s playoff rotation, but the workout video suggests a return there is at least on the table.
