The Golden State Warriors made waves by acquiring Kristaps Porzingis before the trade deadline, but it seems they had their eyes set on an even bigger prize. According to insider Marc Stein, the Warriors made a bold attempt to snag Kawhi Leonard from the Los Angeles Clippers right before the trade clock expired.
In a dramatic last-minute effort, Golden State believed Leonard might become available after the Clippers sent Ivica Zubac to Indiana. However, the Clippers held firm, keeping Leonard off the market. Yet, this move signals that the Warriors might not be done trying to bring Leonard into their fold.
Why the pursuit of Leonard? Even as a seasoned veteran, Leonard's skill set is a dream for the Warriors' dynamic, three-point-centric offense.
With a career three-point shooting percentage of 39.1%, Leonard is a threat both in catch-and-shoot situations and when creating his own shot. His ability to stretch the floor would seamlessly integrate into Golden State’s offensive schemes.
But Leonard’s value extends beyond just offense. His defensive prowess, characterized by sharp instincts and physicality, makes him a two-way force. Adding a player with two championship rings and a knack for impacting both ends of the court would have been a game-changer for the Warriors.
While this trade didn't materialize, the Warriors might revisit the idea come summer. If they do, it could reshape the landscape of the NBA once again.
