Trey Murphy III might not be wearing a Warriors jersey just yet, but don’t be surprised if that changes in the coming months. While the Los Angeles Lakers were long rumored to be a natural fit for the versatile wing, it’s the Golden State Warriors who could make a serious push for him this summer-and they’ve already laid some groundwork.
According to reports, both the Lakers and Warriors made multiple inquiries about Murphy ahead of the trade deadline, signaling strong interest from two of the league’s most storied franchises. That interest isn’t going away anytime soon. In fact, Murphy is expected to be a top target for both teams once the offseason rolls around.
For Golden State, Murphy fits a clear need. He’s the type of player the Warriors have historically thrived with: long, athletic, and capable of impacting both ends of the floor.
At 6-foot-9 with a smooth shooting stroke and growing confidence as a scorer, Murphy brings a rare blend of size, skill, and defensive versatility. He doesn’t need the ball in his hands to be effective, which makes him an ideal fit in a system that prioritizes ball movement and spacing.
This season, Murphy has taken another step forward. He’s averaging 22.1 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game-numbers that reflect his growing comfort as a go-to option when needed, while still playing within the flow of the game.
Shooting nearly 48% from the field and just under 38% from three, he’s a constant threat whether he’s spotting up beyond the arc or attacking closeouts with just a couple of dribbles. And defensively, he’s no slouch either-his length and instincts allow him to guard multiple positions and create turnovers without gambling.
The Warriors are expected to explore a number of high-profile moves this offseason, with names like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kawhi Leonard reportedly on their radar. But if those blockbuster options don’t materialize, Murphy becomes a very attractive Plan B-though calling him a consolation prize would be selling him short. His age, trajectory, and skill set make him a valuable long-term piece for any contender.
Of course, pulling off a deal won’t be simple. The Pelicans have every reason to hold onto Murphy, especially given how well he’s played this season. And with Golden State lacking players like Jonathan Kuminga or Buddy Hield to sweeten the pot, the front office will need to get creative if they want to put together a package that catches New Orleans’ attention.
Still, the interest is real, and the fit is undeniable. As the Warriors look to retool around their veteran core and extend their championship window, don’t be surprised if Trey Murphy III becomes a central figure in that next chapter.
