The Philadelphia 76ers filled one of their biggest offseason needs on Monday, landing Anfernee Simons after outbidding the Golden State Warriors for the 6-foot-3 sharpshooter.
Philadelphia’s roster picture changed quickly after its blockbuster trade for Jaylen Brown. Two priorities stood out right away: a starting power forward and a second-unit wing scorer who could change a game with his shot-making. The Sixers are still searching for that high-caliber PF, but they did check one major box by bringing in Simons, a dynamic scorer who should give the bench a real jolt.
The team made the move official on Monday.
“ Philadelphia 76ers President of Basketball Operations Mike Gansey announced today that the team has signed Anfernee Simons,” the franchise stated.
Simons arrives with a track record that fits the role Philadelphia had in mind. In 55 appearances with Boston and Chicago last season, he averaged 14.3 points while shooting 38.5% from three and 44.0% overall.
He also added 2.5 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 24.9 minutes per game. His scoring bursts were a regular part of the package, too - he topped 20 points 12 times and dropped a season-high 39 points on Jan. 15 against Miami, going 7-of-16 from deep and 13-of-28 from the field.
According to the Stein Line’s Jake Fischer, the Warriors had interest before Simons chose Philadelphia.
The fit is obvious. Simons has spent most of his career as a 15-plus points-per-game scorer and a 36.0% or better three-point shooter, the kind of guard who can heat up fast and force defenses to scramble. He’s an IMG product who brings quick-twitch handle, deep-range confidence, and the sort of scoring punch that can swing a second unit.
If he keeps producing at that level, the 76ers should get exactly what they were after when they went shopping for bench firepower.
