The Warriors’ reported interest in Jalen Smith could send them into a strange bit of roster recycling, with Buddy Hield potentially back in the mix as the salary piece that makes the deal work.
Golden State is looking at the Chicago Bulls big man, but the money is the issue. Smith’s contract and Kristaps Porzingis’ salary don’t line up cleanly, which is where Hield comes in. The Warriors already sent the 33-year-old sharpshooter out in the deal that originally brought Porzingis to the Bay Area in February, and now he could be part of the path to another move.
Hield has already bounced around this offseason, first going to the Charlotte Hornets and then to the Bulls. His $9.7 million expiring deal fits neatly into a Porzingis-Smith swap, though the Warriors would still need to waive a player after completing the trade.
Golden State may not want to bring Hield back, but Smith appears to be the real target. Mike Dunleavy Jr. and the front office are searching for a Porzingis solution, and one that would strengthen the center rotation. Smith has put up 11.0 points and 7.8 rebounds in 22.5 minutes per game, and he’s been a workable stand-in for Nic Claxton, who is nearing a return from a hamstring injury suffered in preseason.
Smith is not being viewed as a long-term starter for Golden State, but he could serve as a short-term answer without cutting into the team’s projected salary cap space next year.
There’s also a longer-term wrinkle. If the Bulls and Warriors made a deal now, Smith and Hield’s contracts could be aggregated again before the deadline if needed, just like Golden State did with Dennis Schroder two seasons ago.
Hield wouldn’t be part of a fully healthy Warriors rotation, but his durability could still matter on nights when the team is missing veterans such as Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. Across eight games with the Bulls, he has averaged 13 minutes, 5.6 points and shooting splits of 48.6% from the floor and 38.1% from three.
Hield can’t be aggregated with Smith in a trade until November 27, but that still leaves enough time for the Warriors to move the pair again before the deadline.
There are other ways Golden State could get to Smith as well. Zach Collins and Tre Jones are two more mid-tier salary options the Warriors could combine with Smith to get just under Porzingis’ contract. The team could also use Moses Moody’s $12.5 million salary, though that route appears unlikely.

Bucks Pulled Into A Frontcourt Rumor That Could Change Their Plans
The Warriors search for frontcourt help has reportedly reached Milwaukee, where trade chatter has linked Golden State to a possible deal aimed at stabilizing the center spot. The framework being discussed would send Kristaps Porzingis, Gui Santos and a future first-round pick to the Bucks in exchange for Kelel Ware and Caris LeVert, a move that would give Golden State a different mix of size and perimeter help while also testing how much value the team places on reshaping its front line now.
For Milwaukee, the rumor adds another layer to a frontcourt picture that could shift quickly if talks ever gain traction. The financial side of the proposal is part of what makes it worth watching, since the numbers would have to work for both sides before anything becomes real, and there is still no confirmation that the teams are anywhere close to a deal. Steve Kerr Adds Another Twist Before Warriors Face Klay And Wiggins
Steve Kerr had a little bit of everything to discuss after practice, from the real-world noise of the midterm election results to the more immediate business of getting the Warriors ready for Miami. He even took a lighthearted swipe at the political chatter around $5,000 checks before turning back to basketball, where Golden State is still sorting through its health and rotation details.
Gui Santos sat out with a sore left knee, while Brandon Williams went through a full practice and is expected to be available. The bigger spotlight, though, is on the matchup with the Heat, which brings Klay Thompson and Andrew Wiggins back into the picture from the other side, adding another layer to a game that already has plenty of familiar faces and emotional baggage attached to it. Warriors Could Force Draymond Green Into An Uncomfortable Next Step
Draymond Greens future has become one of the more notable subplots around Golden State, with his expiring contract putting him squarely in the conversation as a possible trade candidate. It is the kind of situation the Warriors rarely face with one of their defining veterans, especially with Green still central to the identity of the team and still positioned to hit free agency next year.
The range of outcomes is wide enough to keep the story unsettled for now, from a mid-season trade to a buyout or even an early retirement scenario, though no official decision has been made. What makes it especially tricky for the Warriors is that a breakup would not necessarily feel final, since Green could still be in position to return to Golden State in the future. [Read more 🡒]
