Warriors Fringe Players Just Got A Real Shot To Win Jobs

With key players sitting out, the Warriors' less-experienced roster steps up against the Blazers, seeking to impress and earn their spots in Coach Kerr's rotation.

The Warriors are rolling into Portland with a preseason lineup that looks more like a tryout than a typical NBA starting five.

Against the Trail Blazers on Wednesday, Golden State is opening with Brandon Williams, Will Richard, Malevy Leons, Dalen Terry and Charles Bassey. Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Yaxel Lendeborg, Al Horford, Brandin Podziemski, De'Anthony Melton, Gui Santos, Georges Niang and Gary Payton II did not even travel to Portland.

That leaves the Moda Center stage to the players still fighting for real minutes, real roles and, in Williams’ case, a real roster spot.

Williams enters the night with a contract that is non-guaranteed until opening night, so every preseason possession matters. He has already made a strong case over two games, averaging 10.5 points while using his speed to impact the floor in different ways.

The one blemish from his last outing was the ball security - five turnovers. With so much of the offense likely running through him again, Wednesday gives him a chance to remove any lingering doubt.

Bassey is in a different contract situation, with a partially guaranteed standard deal that puts him ahead of Graham Ike, who is on a two-way contract. But the center job still has to be earned, and Bassey knows it.

He’s a sixth-year NBA journeyman who has appeared in only 126 games, mostly as a reserve, so nothing comes easy. He’ll need to keep proving himself in preseason if he wants to stay ahead of Ike and convince Steve Kerr to lean on him instead of going smaller.

Against the Lakers on Tuesday, Bassey looked more comfortable than Ike, especially defensively.

Richard also has something to prove. He’s scored just seven points across two preseason games and has often been parked in the corner while others create. Wednesday should give him a different kind of opportunity, with more chances to handle the ball and show what he can do off the dribble.

That’s not exactly new territory for him. In a November game against the Kings last year, Richard went for 30 points, a reminder that he has more offensive game than he’s shown so far in this preseason. This matchup gives him a clean shot to get into a rhythm and carry that momentum into games where Golden State’s regular rotation is back on the floor.

Warriors Just Sent A Big Opening Night Lineup Message

Steve Kerr is already hinting at how the Warriors might look when the games start to count, and Tuesdays second preseason game offered another clue. Veteran center Al Horford is set to come off the bench, with Gui Santos sliding into the starting lineup as Golden State leans into a smaller look while it sorts out roles and minutes.

Horfords reserve status appears tied to workload management, but the bigger question still hanging over the roster is Kristaps Porzingis. He remains out indefinitely, and his uncertain timeline leaves real doubt about whether he can be available for the season opener against the Lakers, which could push Golden State toward a small-ball answer right out of the gate. Stephen Curry Shares Why Don Nelson Still Means So Much To Warriors

The Warriors opened their preseason schedule against the Lakers at Chase Center with more than just a new look on the court. Golden State also unveiled a jersey patch honoring the late Don Nelson, the former coach who died in August, turning the night into a small but meaningful tribute to one of the most influential figures in franchise history.

Before tipoff, Stephen Curry reflected on what Nelson meant to the organization and the league, a reminder that the Warriors present-day success still carries echoes of earlier eras. Nelsons fingerprints were felt long before Curry became a superstar, but his connection to the current core gives the tribute extra weight, especially on a night when the team was back on the floor to begin another season. Warriors Face A Telling Brandin Podziemski Decision Amid Bigger Questions

The Warriors have more than one roster matter hanging in the balance, but Brandin Podziemski has become a telling one. Marc Stein reported that Golden State is working toward a contract agreement with the young guard, a move that would keep a promising piece in place as the franchise keeps trying to sort out a roster that still feels uneven around its core.

It is a familiar kind of Warriors crossroads: protect the future while managing the present. With concerns already lingering around the health of Draymond Green, Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Kristaps Porzingis, the urgency goes beyond one negotiation, even if Podziemski's situation may resolve soon. How Golden State handles that conversation will say plenty about where the front office thinks this team is headed. [Read more 🡒]
