According to Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area on Tuesday, former Los Angeles Lakers guard Gabe Vincent has been mentioned as an option as Golden State tries to finish filling out its roster. With the Warriors now limited to minimum contracts after signing Draymond Green to a one-year, $27.7 million deal, Vincent could be in the mix as a low-cost veteran guard.
Johnson wrote in the wake of the Green signing, "Gabe Vincent was mentioned as a veteran ball-handling option, per source, during summer league that would help fill a need,"
Vincent’s path has been uneven since his breakout run with the Miami Heat. He was a key part of Miami’s push to the NBA Finals in 2023, averaging a career-high 9.4 points in nearly 26 minutes during the regular season and then bumping that up to 12.7 points and 3.5 assists in the playoffs, where he started all 22 games.
That performance helped land him a three-year, $33 million deal from the Lakers in the 2023 offseason. But the fit never really clicked in Los Angeles.
Vincent was limited by injury in his first season and appeared in only 11 games, then averaged 6.4 points on 40% shooting in his second year. Last season was even rougher, with Vincent putting up 4.4 points on 35.2% shooting across 53 combined games with the Lakers and Atlanta Hawks.
The Hawks acquired Vincent from the Lakers in exchange for Luke Kennard, and he finished last season in Atlanta. Nearly a month into free agency, he still remains unsigned.
For Golden State, the logic is easy to see: the team could use another backup point guard behind Stephen Curry. But Vincent is more of a shooter than a true table-setter, which makes the fit feel shaky on paper.
If this remains just a passing mention, the Warriors may avoid another move that leaves fans scratching their heads. If it turns into something more, it would be another underwhelming chapter in an already flat offseason.
