Warriors Face Big Draymond Decision as Porzingis Nears First Start

As Kristaps Porzingis nears his starting debut for the Warriors, the team faces a pivotal decision on Draymond Green's evolving role amid recent struggles and roster adjustments.

Kristaps Porzingis is on the verge of making his first start for the Golden State Warriors, a move that could prompt a significant decision for head coach Steve Kerr regarding Draymond Green's role on the team.

Kerr announced that Porzingis will come off the bench against the Denver Nuggets, but his playing time is set to increase following a 17-minute restriction in his debut against the Boston Celtics. This suggests that Porzingis might soon join the starting lineup once his minutes rise above 20, especially with veteran Al Horford also coming off the bench.

Recently, Green has been filling the small-ball center role, but the Warriors have struggled, going 2-4 in their last six games without Stephen Curry. Green, at 35, has had difficulty maintaining consistency, except for a standout game against the San Antonio Spurs. Kerr noted that Green is feeling the absence of Curry more than anyone else.

Curry's knee injury will keep him sidelined for at least three more games, with a re-evaluation scheduled in 10 days. This opens the door for Porzingis to potentially step into a starting role, which might push Green to the bench. The move could address size issues and enhance the offense, as Porzingis demonstrated his scoring ability with 12 points in limited minutes.

With Curry out, the Warriors might focus on development. Gui Santos has been impressive since Jimmy Butler's season-ending injury, and Moses Moody has shown promise despite a quieter game against the Celtics. Shifting Green to the bench could allow these young players to continue starting, alongside Pat Spencer and De'Anthony Melton in the backcourt for ball-handling duties.

Green's role has already diminished, and he's not always part of the closing lineups. Moving to the bench could be a natural progression as he transitions into this stage of his career.
