The Golden State Warriors are still searching for ways to get better on both ends this offseason, and Anthony Davis has emerged as a name worth watching.
Davis remains one of the NBA’s better players, but injuries have kept him from being the version of himself he should be. That reality matters, because it could shape how teams around the league view him if he becomes available.
The biggest obstacle may not be his talent. It may be the contract attached to him.
One writer recently pointed to that deal as the factor that could keep Davis from being moved this offseason. “Anthony Davis cuts a highly anomalous figure in the nation's capital, and the legacy big man clearly does not want to play in Washington. He has dropped several less-than-enthusiastic media comments since being unceremoniously routed to the Wizards from Dallas last season.
“The front office is highly motivated to continue its youth movement and stack incoming draft assets, meaning a legacy star doesn't align with its timeline. However, his massive remaining contract will be the ultimate sticking point for teams attempting to match salaries under the strict new apron rules,” Joe Cervenka wrote.
For Golden State, though, that contract may not be enough to scare them off. The Warriors are not in a position to be overly selective about the players they pursue, and Davis is the kind of talent they would have to seriously consider if he’s truly there to be had.
If he becomes available, the Warriors would have to make the move.
