Warriors Close In On De'Anthony Melton Move That Fans Have Begged For

As the Warriors grapple with injuries, De'Anthony Melton's potential increased availability offers a much-needed boost to the lineup.

The Golden State Warriors have been navigating a challenging stretch with a depleted lineup due to injuries. However, there's a glimmer of hope on the horizon as one of their key players, De'Anthony Melton, might soon shed his playing restrictions.

Since his return from a torn ACL in December, the Warriors have been cautious with Melton, particularly avoiding back-to-back games. But now, the team is considering lifting these restrictions, potentially allowing Melton to participate in the remaining back-to-backs this season.

Melton's recent performance against the New Orleans Pelicans was nothing short of spectacular. He dropped a season-high 28 points and delivered a highlight-reel dunk, showcasing his return to peak form. Despite sitting out the following game against Memphis, head coach Steve Kerr hinted that discussions are underway to increase Melton's availability, a move that could be crucial as the Warriors push for a playoff spot in the wake of Jimmy Butler's season-ending injury.

“He’s closer to full capacity as the season progresses, and he’s feeling good,” Kerr noted. “Rick (Celebrini) and I will be discussing his status later this week.”

Melton himself is eager to contribute more consistently, stating, "I definitely can’t wait to finally get out there just to compete with my guys on both days.”

Since rejoining the team on December 4 against the Philadelphia 76ers, Melton has been a game-changer. The Warriors are +231 in his minutes, a figure that stands head and shoulders above his teammates, with Gui Santos in second at +108. Even with limited minutes, Melton is making his mark, averaging 12.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.6 steals per game.

Recently stepping into a starting role, Melton's importance to the team is undeniable, especially with Butler sidelined. However, his impressive play might make him a hot commodity in free agency, as he's likely to decline his $3.5 million player option for next season.

The Warriors' next back-to-back challenge looms on March 9 against the Utah Jazz, followed by a home game against the Chicago Bulls. If Melton is cleared for these games, it could provide the Warriors with a much-needed boost as they aim for postseason success.
