The Warriors are heading into training camp in Hawaii with more than one job still open, but the loudest competition right now sits in the frontcourt. Golden State still has to figure out whether Yaxel Lendeborg or Gui Santos will start alongside Draymond Green when the season opens against the Los Angeles Lakers.
That battle has picked up steam after Green spent time at a minicamp held by injured six-time All-Star Jimmy Butler and came away talking up both young forwards. His reaction to Lendeborg was especially strong after seeing him in person for the first time, another sign of the buzz around the 11th overall pick after he won Summer League MVP and helped lead the Warriors to the championship in Las Vegas.
But Green didn’t stop there. On the latest episode of his podcast after the minicamp, he also made sure to single out Santos, even if he kept it brief. As Green put it, "I think Gui Santos is going to have a big year."
That comment fits with what Steve Kerr has already said about the Brazilian forward. Kerr has "high hopes" for Santos after the late-season stretch when injuries to Butler and others pushed him into a bigger role and his production jumped with it.
For now, Green is the veteran presence in the mix, one part of what looks like a clear top three in the forward rotation until Butler returns. There’s at least an argument that Green could come off the bench to start the year, but that still feels unlikely given his experience, leadership and the way he fits with Stephen Curry.
The bigger picture for Golden State is simple: two starting spots are still there to be won. Curry is locked in at point guard, and Kristaps Porzingis is set at center, which leaves the Warriors sorting through the remaining openings as camp and preseason begin.
Besides the Lendeborg-Santos fight, another position worth watching is shooting guard, where Brandin Podziemski and the now fully healthy De’Anthony Melton are both in the mix.
