The Golden State Warriors are navigating choppy waters with a recent Stephen Curry injury update that has forced them into some quick roster adjustments. With their frontcourt looking more like a MAS*H unit, the Warriors signed Omer Yurtseven to a 10-day contract. This move comes at a crucial juncture as the team embarks on a pivotal six-game road trip, all while vying for a spot in the Western Conference Play-In tournament.
Head coach Steve Kerr didn't mince words when discussing the new addition, admitting, “I don’t know a whole lot about him, other than when we played against him.” While Kerr might not have Yurtseven's EuroLeague stats on speed dial, he certainly remembers the 6’11” center's impact against Golden State in the past. Yurtseven, during his time with the Heat and Jazz, has been a consistent thorn in the Warriors’ side, highlighted by a standout 18-rebound game in 2024.
The signing of Yurtseven was less about choice and more about necessity after a nightmarish game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. In a 127-117 loss, the Warriors' roster took a hit, losing veteran Al Horford to a calf strain and seeing Quinten Post leave with an ankle sprain. With Draymond Green already nursing back soreness and Kristaps Porzingis managing an Achilles issue, the Warriors found themselves dangerously thin in the frontcourt.
Faced with these challenges, the Warriors turned to Yurtseven to shore up their depleted ranks. While some might have expected them to promote Charles Bassey from the G League, given his impressive stats-20.4 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per game-Golden State opted for Yurtseven. His recent 36-point, 12-rebound, three-block performance against the Salt Lake City Stars might have tipped the scales in his favor.
With only 16 games left in the season and their playoff hopes flickering, the Warriors are hoping Yurtseven can provide a much-needed boost as they battle through this injury-laden stretch.
