Steve Kerr's Kuminga Comments Reopen A Warriors Split That Still Stings

Deck: Warriors' head coach Steve Kerr candidly discusses Jonathan Kuminga's transition to the Timberwolves, reflecting on his potential and past challenges during his time with Golden State.

Steve Kerr didn’t have any trouble offering a measured response to Jonathan Kuminga’s new chapter with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

After Golden State and Minnesota met Wednesday night for the first time since the trade, Kerr was asked about the forward who once had a rocky run with the Warriors and is now trying to carve out a bigger role elsewhere. His answer was supportive, even if the history behind it still hangs in the background.

“He's, like most young players, really learning and growing and getting better. So, as I said, more power to him. I want him to have a great career and this seems like a good spot,” Kerr said.

Kuminga responded with a solid outing against his former team, finishing with 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting, along with three rebounds, five assists, two steals and three 3-pointers in the loss to the Warriors. NBC Sports noted that Kuminga should get more opportunity in Minnesota and that the performance was the kind of night that could become more common for him there.

The move brought an end to a long and uneven stretch in Golden State. ESPN’s Anthony Slater reported that “The Golden State Warriors have agreed to trade forward Jonathan Kuminga and guard Buddy Hield to the Atlanta Hawks for veteran center Kristaps Porzingis, league sources told ESPN on Wednesday night,” and added that “The trade ends Kuminga's five-season roller-coaster tenure with Golden State.”

The Warriors have long built around developing their own talent, with Steph Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson standing as the clearest examples. Kuminga never fit that same smooth path. His time in Golden State had been wearing on both sides for a while, and the offseason situation, including his agent’s involvement, only added more tension.

Kerr’s comments were diplomatic, and they sounded like the words of a coach who knows the divorce is already done. He also made it clear that he believes Minnesota is the right place for Kuminga.

Whether either side still has hard feelings is another question, but neither appears interested in saying so out loud. For now, both the player and the franchise seem ready to move on.

Steph Curry Weighed In On A Valkyries Rival Crossing The Line

Stephen Curry had plenty to say after Golden States win over the Timberwolves, and some of it reached well beyond his own box score. In his postgame press conference, Curry praised the Minnesota Lynx and took a moment to salute WNBA players such as Kayla McBride and Olivia Miles, a reminder that his attention stays fixed on the womens game even when he is fresh off an NBA game of his own.

Curry also addressed McBrides use of his signature Night Night celebration in a previous game against the Golden State Valkyries, adding another layer to a running crossover between the two leagues. McBrides big night, along with the ongoing 2026 WNBA Finals matchup between the Valkyries and the Atlanta Dream, has kept the spotlight on how much these moments resonate across basketball, even when the particulars still leave plenty of room for the next chapter. Brandin Podziemski Just Gave Warriors Fans A Reason To Watch Closer

Brandin Podziemski is already giving the Warriors something to watch closely after a quiet start to the season. In Golden States 119-114 win over the Timberwolves, the second-year guard chipped in eight points, six assists and five rebounds, a useful all-around line for a player still getting his footing after missing the opener with a back injury.

The more interesting part may be where Podziemski is trying to take his game next. He said he spent the offseason studying Knicks All-Star Jalen Brunsons tape, with an emphasis on creating more threes and getting to the free-throw line, which is a promising sign for a Warriors team that could use another guard who can help organize the offense and pressure defenses in a different way. If this early glimpse is any indication, Podziemskis development is going to be worth tracking. [Read more 🡒]

Steph Curry Just Gave The Warriors The Spark They Desperately Needed

Stephen Currys night in Minnesota was the kind the Warriors have needed early in the season, the sort that can steady a team still trying to find its footing. He poured in 44 points to help Golden State edge the Timberwolves 119-114, and the result moved the Warriors to 2-3 with some much-needed momentum after a shaky start.

Jonathan Kuminga and Georges Niang also helped fill in the gaps around Curry, giving the Warriors a broader lift than they had been getting. Minnesota got a big scoring night from Yaxel Lendeborg, who finished with 26 points, but Golden States win still stood out as a reminder that when Curry is in rhythm, the ceiling for this group looks a lot different.
