Stephen Curry’s future with the Warriors has become one of those looming NBA questions that can hang over a franchise for years, but veteran reporter Marcus Thompson II isn’t treating it like a mystery.
Thompson, a longtime NBA journalist and The Athletic columnist, said he expects Curry to stay put when the time comes for his next contract decision after the 2026-27 season. In a conversation with HoopsHype tied to his new book, Game Changers: The GOATs Who Revolutionized Basketball, Thompson was asked directly, “Do you expect him to re-sign with the Warriors?”
His answer was blunt.
“Steph is re-signing. Steph isn't going anywhere.
He never was. It's really important to him.
He said this for years.”
Thompson said Curry has long made it clear that he “wants to play for the same team his whole career. And I think it would take something dramatic to get him off that.
And at 38, it's tough. Like, where's he going?
I mean, that's a big one. Where does Steph Curry feel comfortable going and feel like it's his?”
He also described Curry as a “very honor-driven player and I do think he takes honor in, hey, he'd rather go down not winning with his guys than going somewhere else and winning.”
For Warriors fans, that’s at least a reassuring read from someone who has followed the franchise closely for years. With Curry and Draymond Green still serving as the faces of Golden State, the idea of Curry leaving would be a massive shift. Thompson’s view is that it won’t happen.
