SAN FRANCISCO - A Tough Road Ahead for the Warriors
The Warriors are facing a challenging stretch after a series of setbacks. With Jimmy Butler out for the season due to a torn ACL and Steph Curry sidelined with “runner’s knee,” the team is struggling to find its footing. These injuries have been a significant blow, and the Warriors have felt it in their recent performances.
On consecutive nights, the Warriors suffered tough losses to the Utah Jazz and Chicago Bulls, dropping them to the No. 9 seed in the Western Conference. This position makes their path to the playoffs more difficult, as they are now bound for the NBA play-in tournament. Coach Steve Kerr emphasized the importance of securing the No. 7 or No. 8 seed, which offers a more favorable position with two chances to advance.
After leading by four points in the first quarter against the Bulls, the Warriors faltered, trailing by six at halftime. Despite a spirited comeback led by Pat Spencer, Will Richard, Gui Santos, Gary Payton II, and Al Horford, they ultimately fell 130-124 in overtime. This collapse negated their recent victory over the Houston Rockets and overshadowed their competitive game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Kerr acknowledged the team's struggles, noting the impact of injuries. Besides Curry and Butler, Moses Moody is out with a wrist injury, and Kristaps Porzingis, Horford, and Richard missed the game against the Jazz. Seth Curry returned from a lengthy absence but didn’t play against the Bulls, while De’Anthony Melton was held out due to an adductor issue.
The Warriors' recent opponents, the Jazz and Bulls, were also missing key players, making these losses even more frustrating. The Jazz had ended a seven-game losing streak, and the Bulls had a tough February, losing all 11 games.
Despite these challenges, the Warriors are focused on making a playoff push with a healthy Curry. Gary Payton II and Pat Spencer highlighted the importance of finishing strong and securing a better seeding position. They understand the significance of having two opportunities to advance in the play-in tournament, as opposed to a single-elimination scenario.
The Warriors have lost three straight games for the first time in three months, and even the No. 7 seed seems out of reach. The team now faces a crucial stretch of 17 games to climb back up the standings and secure a spot in the playoffs. With resilience and determination, the Warriors aim to overcome this low point and remind the league of their potential.
