After a week-long hiatus for the All-Star break, the Golden State Warriors are gearing up to face the Boston Celtics on Thursday night. However, they'll be stepping onto the court without their star player, Steph Curry.
Steph Curry Sidelined Against Celtics Due to Knee Injury
The Warriors' standout guard, Steph Curry, has been officially ruled out for the matchup against Boston due to right patellofemoral pain syndrome, commonly known as "runner's knee." This condition causes pain and swelling around the kneecap, sidelining Curry for the sixth consecutive game. It also kept him from participating in the All-Star game, despite being named a starter.
The extended rest from the All-Star break hasn't been enough for Curry to return to action, raising some concerns. However, the Warriors are prioritizing his long-term health over a quick comeback to avoid aggravating the injury.
"We've got to be certain," Warriors coach Steve Kerr emphasized. "He's got to be certain. ... It is a little nebulous, but that's the nature of the injury."
Curry himself highlighted the importance of caution earlier this month, noting the ongoing challenge of managing the pain and inflammation. "It's a matter of learning as I go what works rehab-wise," he explained.
"Because it's still painful. You have to try to get rid of all the inflammation and pain.
It's something we still have to monitor and injury-manage, but it's something where, if I come back too early, it could flare up."
While Curry will miss the game against Boston, the Warriors are hopeful for his return soon. They find themselves in a fierce battle for playoff positioning in the competitive Western Conference. Adding to their challenges, the team is also missing star forward Jimmy Butler for the rest of the season due to a knee injury.
In the 39 games he's played this season, Curry has been a force, averaging 27.2 points, 4.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game. The Warriors will need to rally in his absence and continue their push for the playoffs.
