Steph Curry Hints at Bold Warriors Move Before Trade Deadline

As trade rumors swirl, Stephen Curry signals trust in the Warriors front office while hinting at the teams urgency to reshape its roster.

Stephen Curry Speaks on Trade Deadline: “Our Job Is to Keep Winning Games”

As the NBA calendar inches closer to the Feb. 5 trade deadline, all eyes are on the Golden State Warriors - and more specifically, on what kind of moves they might make to recalibrate their roster. The team’s championship core is still intact, but with Jimmy Butler’s season-ending ACL injury shaking up the league’s short-term landscape, there’s a growing sense that the Warriors could be active in the coming days.

Stephen Curry, the face of the franchise and its on-court compass, isn’t tipping his hand when it comes to potential trades. But after dropping 27 points in a 140-124 win over the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night, he did offer some insight into how he views the front office’s process - and his role within it.

“We’ve always had an expectation,” Curry said postgame. “Myself, Draymond - just knowing the conversations are happening all the time.”

Curry made it clear he doesn’t deal in hypotheticals. That’s not where his energy goes. He trusts the front office, led by general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr., to do their due diligence, explore the market, and bring him into the loop only when there’s something concrete on the table.

“I don’t ever get into hypotheticals. It’s a waste of time, it’s a waste of energy.

It’s not my job to do that,” Curry said. “Mike and the entire front office, I’m sure are making calls and I’m sure are taking looks, seeing what’s going on.

And then if there’s something material, something real, we have conversations about it. And decisions are made.”

That collaborative approach isn’t new - it’s been part of the Warriors’ organizational DNA since the Bob Myers era. Curry emphasized that while he’s part of the discussion, he’s not driving the decision-making. And that’s just fine with him.

“There’s a trust that exists in the communication,” he said. “It started with Bob, it’s transitioned to Mike.

It doesn’t mean every conversation goes the way I want it to. It doesn’t mean they get the feedback that they want.

But it’s collaborative.”

Curry’s comments come amid a swirl of league-wide trade chatter, with familiar names - including longtime Warriors target Giannis Antetokounmpo - resurfacing in rumors. But Curry isn’t getting caught up in the noise. He’s focused on what he can control: the product on the floor.

“Our job is to keep winning games,” he said. “Keeping our energy as high as we can around here.

We’re not ignorant to what’s going on around the league. Rumors and trade talks and who’s on the block and all that type of stuff.

I know what’s going on. But right now, it’s just about trying to continue to win.

Because if we lose sight of that on the court, all that other stuff doesn’t really matter.”

That mindset has been a hallmark of Curry’s leadership - steady, focused, and team-first. Even when asked how often he’s looped in on potential moves, he kept the focus on the culture of trust that’s been built over time.

“Every offseason. Every lead-up to the trade deadline, whether something happens or not,” Curry said.

“You want to be in a team and a culture that, again, I know if there’s something material, they’re gonna run it by me. And if it’s not, I don’t necessarily need to know what’s going on.”

With just over a week to go before the deadline, the Warriors are in a familiar position - weighing the future while trying to win in the present. And while Curry may not be calling the shots behind the scenes, his voice clearly carries weight. For now, though, he’s keeping his focus where it’s always been: between the lines, leading a team still hungry to compete.
