After the whistle had already blown, the New York Liberty guard spun her head away from the rim and still buried a no-look three for France in its 90-61 win over China at the FIBA World Cup in Berlin. Ballislife caught the replay and put the obvious comparison front and center: “This is crazy! @StephenCurry30 will probably try this next season.”
The shot didn’t count, but it didn’t need to. It spread fast anyway.
Johannès finished with 15 points and seven assists in nearly 21 minutes, and France moved on to the semifinals. She has been living on long-range shots for years, and this one stood out even in a tournament full of highlights. She plays for the New York Liberty and wears No. 23 for France.
Through four games, Johannès is averaging 16.5 points in about 19 minutes while shooting 48.5 percent from deep. She scored 17 in each group game before adding 15 in the quarterfinal. France’s win included 14 made threes, with Gabby Williams and Janelle Salaün also scoring.
Now France gets host Germany on Saturday in its first World Cup semifinal. The United States is on the other side of the bracket after a 108-56 win over Hungary, and Caitlin Clark continues piling up assists.
Curry, of course, has become the shorthand for shots like this. He owns two World Cup golds from 2010 and 2014, is the all-time NBA three-point king, and already celebrates like he knows the impossible is possible. He’s in China on a Li-Ning tour and isn’t on a USA roster this month, but that hasn’t stopped fans from treating Johannès’ dead-ball no-look as a future item on his checklist.
The comparison fits because Curry has spent his career making outrageous looks feel routine. Johannès just gave the internet another one to chase.
