The Mavericks may have taken heat on draft night, but their decision to use the No. 9 pick on Michigan forward Morez Johnson Jr. is looking a lot smarter after what he did against Golden State in Las Vegas.
Johnson’s pro debut was the kind of performance that turns skepticism into second-guessing. He poured in 27 points on 12-of-17 shooting and added eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks. Dallas lost the game, but Johnson was the clear standout on the floor.
That showing came after plenty of draft-night criticism. Plenty of observers saw the pick as a reach, especially with Johnson coming off a college season in which he averaged 13.1 points and 7.3 rebounds. The biggest concern centered on whether he could address Dallas’ outside-shooting issues.
The front office, though, clearly saw something different during the pre-draft process. Johnson had just been coached to a college national championship by new head coach Dusty May, and that connection appears to have mattered.
Kevin O'Connor relayed a line from May’s staff: "We have 'Rez, and they don't." Draft analyst Rich Stayman also said Mavericks fans have every reason to be excited about the rookie.
What makes Johnson so intriguing is how he fits without needing the offense built around him. He brings energy, runs the floor, attacks the glass, and finishes around missed shots. That style lets him work alongside Cooper Flagg without crowding the same spaces.
For a pick that drew plenty of skepticism at the time, Johnson’s first night in a Mavericks uniform gave the team plenty of reason to feel good about the gamble.

Warriors Linked To Familiar Ex-Lakers Guard In Latest Roster Twist
With the LeBron James free-agency picture still hanging over the league, the Warriors are doing what teams in their position often do: keeping their options open while still showing a preference for their own roster. One name that has surfaced in the background is Gary Payton II, a familiar guard who has already carved out a place in Golden States recent history as a reliable, hard-nosed contributor and a champion with the club.
Paytons value to the Warriors has always gone beyond the box score, even if he did give them steady production last season. For now, though, the broader roster conversation appears to be centered on what Golden State does if the bigger swing does not come together, which is why the possibility of another reunion remains one of the more interesting loose ends in their offseason. Warriors Fans Wont Love What Kuminga Could Suddenly Be Worth
Jonathan Kumingas market may be getting a fresh jolt, and it comes at a time when the Warriors are already looking back at the way they handled his exit. According to Khobi Price of the New York Post, the Lakers have interest in a sign-and-trade with the Hawks involving Kuminga, a reminder that his value around the league can still move fast even after Golden State moved on from him. What makes the situation sting a little more for Warriors fans is how little the team got in return when it sent him to Atlanta.
The contrast is hard to miss because Atlanta could be the team cashing in on the kind of draft compensation Golden State did not secure. Kumingas talent has always made him a tricky evaluation, especially when his desire to be a star sometimes clashed with the fit alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. And while the Warriors did wind up with Kristaps Porzingis in the broader deal, his health issues have limited how much that return has actually helped, leaving the bigger question of Kumingas worth hanging over the whole sequence. Warriors Beat Mavericks As One Rookie Suddenly Has Fans Talking
The Warriors Summer League run picked up a little more intrigue with a 101-90 win over the Mavericks, and rookie Yaxel Lendeborg was a big reason why. He filled the box score with 21 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, giving Golden State a versatile presence that stood out in a game where the young roster needed someone to steady things.
Lendeborgs night also added another layer to his early summer resume after he had already appeared in the California Classic before this latest stop in Vegas. Golden State still has three Summer League games left, beginning against the Oklahoma City Thunder, and the focus now shifts to whether Lendeborg can keep building on a performance that has already started to get people talking.
