Luka Made The Warriors Pay For One Costly Mistake

Luka Doncic silences a rookie's trash talk with his impressive performance, leading the Lakers to a commanding victory over the Warriors.

Luka Doncic turned a little second-quarter chatter into a full-blown message at Crypto.com Arena on Wednesday night.

The Lakers’ season opener looked tight early, but Los Angeles pulled away for a 127-105 win over the Warriors after Doncic went at rookie Yaxel Lendeborg following some trash talk late in the first half. With the Lakers ahead 53-48 and less than three minutes left in the second quarter, Lendeborg started jawing at Doncic.

“You cannot f-king guard me, man,” Doncic seemed to say after drawing a foul, then started clapping as if he were getting riled up. Lendeborg was instantly subbed out.

Doncic wasn’t done there. A few moments later, he buried a mid-range jumper over the Warriors, pointed toward Lendeborg on the bench and kept talking.

“Come back out, p-y,” Doncic seemed to say. Steve Kerr apparently tried to play peacemaker, but that clearly didn’t work.

Then came the knockout response: Doncic drilled a half-court buzzer-beater to end the half, swinging a game that had been a one-point contest after the first quarter into a 66-52 Lakers lead at the break.

He kept rolling into the third quarter after scoring 10 points to close the second, and by the time Los Angeles pushed the margin to 34 at the end of the period, the night was essentially over for him. The Lakers sat him for the entire fourth quarter.

Doncic finished with 28 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and three steals, shooting 7-for-18 from the field and 5-for-12 from deep.

The trash talk carried a little extra bite because Lendeborg had already admitted earlier this month that he was worried about guarding Doncic. After being told he’d have the assignment in a preseason game, he said, “I said, ‘What the f-k?’” and added, “Nobody can stop him; do your best,” Frank Vogel apparently warned him.

“I tried to act, like, all cool, and not spooked,” Lendeborg said after the Warriors’ preseason win over the Lakers. “But I was spooked, man.

That’s crazy. My mind was all over the place after that.”

Los Angeles stayed in control for most of the fourth quarter while the starters watched from the bench. The Lakers now meet the Clippers on Friday night, October 22, while the Warriors face the Grizzlies that same night. The teams meet again on October 30 in their NBA Cup matchup.

Warriors May Be Forced Into A Frontcourt Move Sooner Than Expected

The Warriors frontcourt depth is already looking fragile before the season has even had a chance to settle in. Kristaps Porzingis is sidelined by an illness, Charles Bassey is dealing with knee tendinitis, and that leaves Golden State leaning on Al Horford, whose minutes will have to be managed, plus two-way player Graham Ike to handle center duty.

For a team built on precision and versatility, that kind of uncertainty in the middle is hard to ignore. It puts pressure on the Warriors to sort through the market for another body, and possibly a more meaningful upgrade, sooner rather than later as they try to protect themselves from being too thin at one of the most important spots on the roster. Warriors Face A Costly Win-Now Decision At Center

The Warriors are once again weighing whether to push harder into the present or protect what little flexibility they still have left. With conversations reportedly having taken place with the Bucks about Kristaps Porzingis and Myles Turner, Golden State is exploring a center upgrade that could reshape its rotation while also carrying a real cost in draft capital, another player and more room to maneuver in free agency.

Myles Turners contract only adds to the complexity, since any move for him would tighten the Warriors long-term options even further. Milwaukee, for now, does not appear eager to make a deal, leaving Golden State in a familiar spot: trying to decide how much future value it is willing to spend in order to bolster the roster right away. Steve Kerrs Jimmy Butler Update Says A Lot About Warriors Ceiling

The Warriors are heading into their 2026-27 opener against the Lakers with Jimmy Butler still on the sideline, but there is at least a positive sign on the injury front. Steve Kerr said Butler is doing well in his recovery from the torn ACL he suffered a year ago, and he was recently spotted working out in the teams weight room as the season approaches.

Kerr also spoke about what Butler brings when he is on the floor, pointing to the veterans unique presence and mentality. For Golden State, that kind of update matters because it speaks not just to Butlers health, but to how much higher the teams ceiling could climb once he is back in the lineup. [Read more 🡒]
