Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wasted no time showing LeBron James respect after James decided to move on from the Los Angeles Lakers.
In a post on social media, the Lakers legend praised James for what he brought to the franchise and offered a few words about what could come next.
"LeBron was a winner on and off the court, and Laker fans should appreciate his performance for the last 8 years," Abdul-Jabbar wrote.
He then floated the idea of James heading back to Cleveland, adding, "If LeBron goes home to Cleveland, it won’t matter if they win the World Championship or not because his hometown fans will get their opportunity to say their goodbyes to one of the greatest ever. And who knows one day he may become Mayor of Cleveland !!"
James’ Lakers run included a pair of major milestones against Abdul-Jabbar’s place in the record book. He passed Abdul-Jabbar as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer in 2023 while wearing a Lakers uniform, and earlier this year he also broke Kareem’s record for the most field goals made in league history.
The relationship between the two has not always been warm. James said several years ago that he and Abdul-Jabbar have "no relationship," but Abdul-Jabbar’s message made clear there is still mutual respect.
Looking ahead, James is expected to be honored by the Lakers in the same way Abdul-Jabbar was, with his jersey likely to be retired eventually. He is also a sure bet to join Abdul-Jabbar in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
