Kristaps Porzingis seems to have dodged a bullet with his recent back issue during the Golden State Warriors' 115-101 loss to the Detroit Pistons. Leaving the game in the second quarter with "lower back soreness," Porzingis later shared how the discomfort built up throughout the first half.
"I started feeling it in the first quarter," Porzingis explained. "It began spasming, and while I was warm, I managed okay. But during one play, I felt it spasm."
The play in question occurred during a transition when Porzingis leapt to deflect a pass aimed at Pistons center Paul Reed. He felt his back tightening up in the moments leading to that play, but it was this specific action that really set it off. After that, Porzingis exited the game and didn’t return.
Back issues aren't new territory for Porzingis, but he’s managed them well in recent years. Reflecting on past experiences, he noted, "I'm pretty good at managing my back, so I'm confident it will go away quickly. It's tight now, but I’ll get it sorted soon."
While this incident doesn't seem too alarming, it's still a bit of unfortunate timing for Porzingis and the Warriors. Just as he was finding his rhythm, having recently tied his season high of 30 points against the Wizards, this setback occurred. Before facing the Pistons, Porzingis had been gradually increasing his playing time, logging solid minutes in four of the last five games.
Looking ahead, Porzingis mentioned it’s "probably" unlikely he’ll suit up for the Warriors' next game against the Atlanta Hawks, especially given the team's cautious approach with back-to-back schedules.
The Warriors will have to adjust without Porzingis as they face former teammate Jonathan Kuminga and aim to turn around a challenging road trip, currently sitting at 1-3 and 33-37 for the season.
