Iman Shumpert’s latest run on Gil’s Arena didn’t take long to stir up Kevin Durant.
After landing a new deal to appear on the show for the 2026-27 season, Shumpert used his second episode to revisit Durant’s 2016 decision to join the Warriors in free agency - and he didn’t hold back about how he sees that move affecting his own career.
“You’re the reason I missed out on two rings, dog. It was your fault how you went and joined some n--s that didn’t need you.
You know what I’m saying? They didn’t need you,” Shumpert said on the show.
Durant fired back on Instagram Threads, then later erased the comment.
“Toughen up, shorty. Thanks for taking care of that, man, Gil; he was dead in the water,” Durant wrote in a comment he subsequently deleted.
The exchange is just the latest reminder that Durant’s move to Golden State still gets under the skin of some former opponents. Durant and Shumpert have matched up 20 times in their careers, including the playoffs, with Durant holding a 14-6 edge.
Against Shumpert, Durant has put up 33.4 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game while shooting 51.2% from the field and 42.6% from 3-point range.
Durant’s response was notable not just for the bite, but for how quickly it disappeared. Shumpert was talking about the impact of Durant’s choice on his own career, while Durant took the shot in a much more personal direction before deleting it.
Even so, the larger debate is the same one that has lingered for years: what would the league have looked like if Durant had never joined a Warriors team that was reacting to Cleveland beating them in the NBA Finals?
Shumpert’s comment also opened him up to some scrutiny of his own. In the 2018 NBA Finals, he wasn’t even in the player rotation, which makes his claim about two rings harder to square.
Still, Durant’s influence on those Finals was obvious. He was named Finals MVP both times, and the what-if conversation around his move to Golden State is still very much alive a decade later.
