Jordan Poole's Fresh Start Already Feels Uncomfortably Familiar

Despite a coaching change, Jordan Poole struggles to find his place in the Pelicans' crowded guard rotation, leaving his future uncertain.

Jordan Poole came to New Orleans looking for a reset, but the early signs suggest he may be headed for another frustrating season in the shadows of the rotation.

The former Golden State Warriors guard has put together a solid preseason on a per-minute basis, but that hasn’t translated into a meaningful rise on Jamahl Mosley’s depth chart. Through three exhibition games, Poole has averaged 9.0 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists while shooting 63.6% from the floor and 42.9% from 3-point range. His plus-minus sits at +10, the best mark on the Pelicans despite the team’s 2-1 preseason record.

Even with those numbers, Poole ranks just ninth in average minutes. That points to a limited role once the regular season starts next Wednesday against the Indiana Pacers. New Orleans added Bennedict Mathurin in free agency, and the backcourt picture is crowded enough that Poole may be stuck further down the pecking order than expected.

The Pelicans are also making room for Jeremiah Fears, whose development remains a priority. He is expected to come off the bench behind veterans Dejounte Murray and Herb Jones, while Mathurin adds another reserve option. Put it all together and Poole could find himself fifth in line before the season even settles in.

One telling moment came Wednesday against the Dallas Mavericks, when Mosley started the reserves but Poole still entered off the bench alongside Zion Williamson and Trey Murphy III. For a player hoping a coaching change would bring a cleaner path, that usage said plenty.

If this is how the season unfolds, Joe Dumars and the Pelicans front office may keep searching for a trade that can return some value while giving Poole a real fresh start. His $34 million expiring contract is still a tough sell, but he could still help a playoff contender as a scoring punch off the bench. That type of value may be more realistic after this season, when he is likely to be on a much smaller deal.

Poole’s name still carries the memory of what he showed with the Warriors, and the $130 million contract that followed. Right now, though, he looks stuck on a team that has not given him much room to matter.

LeBron's 76ers Free Agency Saga Just Got A New Curry Twist

Stephen Curry didnt try to make LeBron James free agency sound bigger than it was, but he did confirm there was at least some conversation along the way. The Warriors star said he and James have a good friendship, and that the subject of James decision did come up as the veteran star weighed his next move.

Curry said James took his time and handled the process on his own terms before ultimately signing with another team, and he seemed genuinely pleased that James landed in a spot he wants to be. It was a small window into a relationship that has long mixed competition with respect, and a reminder that even the biggest names in the league still check in with one another when the offseason starts moving. Warriors Trade Buzz Raises A Bigger Deadline Concern

The Warriors trade chatter has started to widen beyond the usual deadline filler, with Zion Williamson emerging as a name worth watching if Golden State decides to chase a bigger swing. The idea says as much about the teams search for impact as it does about Williamsons recent health and production, because any serious move would have to balance upside with the reality that the roster still has clear holes to address.

Golden States bigger concern may be less about landing a headline and more about fitting the right pieces around its core, especially with center still looking like a position of need. Trey Murphy III is also part of the conversation as the front office explores different paths, which only adds to the sense that the Warriors are weighing multiple timelines at once as the deadline approaches. Warriors Are Making A Costly Jimmy Butler Bet

The Warriors are still operating like a team willing to make one more big swing, even if the risk is obvious. They reportedly passed on trade talks that would have sent Jimmy Butler out for Anthony Davis or Jaylen Brown because the price in draft capital and salary was too steep, a sign that Golden State is trying to balance urgency with caution as it looks for the right way to extend its contention window.

That approach leaves Butler at the center of a bet that could shape the franchises next stretch. Golden State remains confident in his value despite the ACL injury, and the front office is counting on his recovery to keep the roster in the mix. The larger backdrop is familiar enough for this group too, since the team also explored moving Butler in a deal involving Giannis Antetokounmpo before that path closed and Antetokounmpo ended up signing with the Miami Heat.
