Jonathan Kuminga’s free agency has taken another turn, and this latest one should sit well with the Warriors.
The Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves had looked like the main landing spots for the former Golden State forward, who was still unsigned toward the end of August. Now the Chicago Bulls have entered the mix, giving Golden State a new outcome to prefer in a process that has been hanging over Kuminga’s future.
According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, "the Bulls are involved in Jonathan Kuminga's process to a real degree, in addition to Lakers, Wolves."
For the Warriors, that matters. A move to Chicago would keep Kuminga out of the Western Conference, which is the cleaner result for a team that has already spent plenty of time trying to keep him away from rival interest. Golden State had been firm in shutting down interest from the Phoenix Suns and, most notably, the Sacramento Kings during Kuminga’s restricted free agency last year, and later moved him to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Kristaps Porzingis at February’s mid-season deadline.
The Lakers remain the most obvious headline option. They would give Kuminga a shot at immediate revenge against Golden State, and the schedule already has that angle baked in: the two teams are set to meet on opening night, October 21, and then again in an NBA Cup matchup the following week.
Minnesota would also offer a strong basketball fit. Like the Lakers, the Timberwolves could give Kuminga a real role on a playoff team, with minutes and responsibility available in a way Chicago may not.
That’s the big difference here. The Bulls are building around a young core, and their path is much less clear in a crowded conference.
They’re unlikely to crack the top 10, and that makes the fit harder to read from Kuminga’s side. Chicago will almost certainly keep its focus on Matas Buzelis and, especially, fourth overall pick Caleb Wilson, which could leave Kuminga as little more than a third forward and a bench piece.
That kind of landing spot doesn’t scream big-money future, especially if he ends up on a one-year prove-it deal.
Even so, Chicago’s entry into the race changes the picture. And for the Warriors, any path that sends Kuminga east is the one they’d rather see.
