The Golden State Warriors faced a challenging night in New England, taking on the formidable Boston Celtics in their third straight road game. Despite getting a bit healthier, they were still battling a talent gap, especially with the Celtics welcoming back Jayson Tatum. The Warriors fought hard, but ultimately fell short, losing 120-99.
The game kicked off with a burst of energy. Kristaps Porziņģis set the tone early with two emphatic blocks on the first defensive play, hinting at a potential standout performance against his former team.
However, after missing both free throws, Porziņģis' impact waned, and the Celtics quickly seized control. The first few minutes were a whirlwind of fast-paced action, but it didn’t take long for Boston’s stars, Tatum and Jaylen Brown, to dominate.
Brown was particularly unstoppable, racking up 19 points in the first quarter alone, helping the Celtics to a 36-23 lead.
The Warriors showed resilience at the start of the second quarter, creating turnovers and converting them into points. Their defense tightened, and they managed to get into the bonus early.
However, their offensive rhythm soon faltered, while Tatum found his stride, showcasing his return to form after an Achilles injury. The Celtics extended their lead to 20 points, but the Warriors managed to trim it to 63-50 by halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Warriors sparked some hope with a quick six-point run, playing solid defense. Yet, despite their efforts, they couldn’t close the gap completely. The Celtics maintained a steady lead, and just when it seemed the Warriors might rally, Boston pulled away again, stretching their advantage to 21 points.
The Warriors didn’t back down, though. They launched a 9-0 run between the third and fourth quarters, narrowing the deficit to nine points.
But turnovers and a barrage of Celtics’ three-pointers dashed their comeback hopes. Boston responded with an eight-point run of their own, sealing the game.
Off the bench, Gary Payton II and Pat Spencer led the Warriors with 14 points each, with Payton adding six rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Draymond Green and Gui Santos contributed 13 points and five rebounds apiece, with Green also dishing out five assists. Porziņģis and Brandin Podziemski had solid stats but struggled with shooting accuracy.
For the Celtics, it was a showcase of star power. Brown continued his stellar season, posting 32 points, six rebounds, five assists, and two steals.
Tatum added a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Boston outshot the Warriors, particularly from beyond the arc, hitting 35.9% of their threes compared to Golden State’s 23.3%.
With this loss, the Warriors' record dropped to 33-36. They’ll aim to rebound on Friday against the Detroit Pistons, continuing their six-city road journey.
