Gui Santos Suddenly Has A Real Opening Night Opportunity

As Kristaps Porzingis grapples with health concerns, young forward Gui Santos seizes an unexpected opportunity to shine in the Warriors' lineup.

Kristaps Porzingis’ latest health setback could end up creating an opening for Gui Santos.

Golden State still has to navigate the larger problem if Porzingis is unavailable for opening night against the Los Angeles Lakers later this month. But on the Warriors’ side, one player who clearly benefits is Santos, whose path back into the starting five suddenly looks a lot cleaner.

That wasn’t the case just a few days ago. Santos, who started 29 of Golden State’s final 31 games last season - including both Play-In Tournament games - was left out of the starting group for Sunday’s preseason opener against the LA Clippers, even after emerging as the team’s biggest bright spot down the stretch last year.

Steve Kerr opted to keep size on the floor by starting Al Horford, though he had already admitted before Tuesday night’s game against the Lakers that leaning on a 40-year-old starter would be tough with minutes needing to be managed.

Against Los Angeles, the Warriors went smaller, and Santos was back in the mix alongside Yaxel Lendeborg and Draymond Green in the frontcourt. Santos didn’t light up the box score - he finished with seven points in 20 minutes and filled more of a supporting role - but the lineup itself told the bigger story.

Golden State looked much more alive. Even with the caveat that the Lakers were missing Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves and Walker Kessler, the Warriors pushed the pace, ran the floor and played with a burst that was missing in Sunday’s loss to the Clippers. That showed up in a 45-point first quarter and 81 points by halftime.

Still, Santos’ role isn’t simple. The Warriors remain high on him after the way he finished last season, but Lendeborg, taken 11th overall in June’s NBA draft, has already made a strong early impression and appears set to claim one of those forward spots. Draymond Green’s place is secure, too, given Kerr’s trust in him and his fit with Stephen Curry.

So for Santos to get back into the starting lineup, Golden State likely has to go small and play all three forwards together. If Porzingis misses time, that’s the lane. And that’s why Santos stands to gain more than almost anyone else from the latest injury concern.

Warriors Fringe Players Just Got A Real Shot To Win Jobs

The preseason has turned into a real proving ground for a group of Warriors on the bubble, with Golden State resting most of its regular rotation for a game against the Portland Trail Blazers and turning to Brandon Williams, Will Richard, Malevy Leons, Dalen Terry and Charles Bassey instead. For players like Williams and Bassey, nights like this matter because they are no longer just filling space in October. They are auditioning for jobs, minutes and whatever opportunity is still available once the roster gets trimmed down.

Williams enters the game on a non-guaranteed contract, while Bassey is working on a partially guaranteed deal, so the stakes are built right into the paperwork. The rest of the group has similar incentive to make an impression, especially in a setting where the Warriors are giving them real run against NBA competition rather than hiding them at the end of a blowout. For fringe players, this is the kind of chance that can change how the season starts, even if the final answer is still waiting on the other side of the box score. [Read more 🡒]

Warriors Suddenly Face A Jimmy Butler Decision That Could Reshape Everything

Jimmy Butlers latest recovery update offers at least some reassurance for a Warriors team that has had to keep one eye on the bigger picture. He tore his right ACL in January against the Miami Heat, and the surgery was successful after he consulted several specialists before heading into the procedure in Los Angeles. For now, Butler has said he is feeling good as he works back from a significant injury, which matters for any team trying to evaluate what comes next.

The harder part is sorting out how his status could ripple beyond rehab. There is already speculation from one Bleacher Report writer about a possible Butler trade to the New Orleans Pelicans, a reminder that his name can still pull the conversation in multiple directions even while he recovers. Nothing along those lines has been confirmed, but it is the kind of idea that keeps a decision like this from feeling routine, especially for a Warriors team watching the entire situation unfold from a distance. Warriors Suddenly Have Another Contract Decision That Could Shape Their Future

Stephen Currys new two-year, $116 million extension gave the Warriors a clearer picture of where their core is headed, and it also sharpened the spotlight on the financial choices still ahead. Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler have both said they would like to finish their careers in Golden State, though doing so may mean taking smaller deals to make the roster math work.

Brandin Podziemski is now another name to watch in that equation. NBA insider Brett Siegel has reported that the young guard is a candidate for an extension, adding another layer to a payroll picture that already has plenty of moving parts. For a team trying to balance veteran continuity with long-term flexibility, even one more contract decision could have a ripple effect. [Read more 🡒]
