LeBron James has turned the NBA offseason into a waiting game, and the clock is still running.
The four-time NBA champion is heading into the 24th season of his career, a milestone no player has ever reached, and there’s still a real possibility this won’t be his last stop. For now, though, James has kept the league guessing about where he’ll play next season, leaving teams, agents and executives in limbo.
Last week, James offered only a small hint about the timeline when he said, “I won't hold you guys up too much longer,”
That was enough to keep the conversation moving, but not enough to settle anything. James has not given clear signals about his next move, even as teams have reached out to his agent, Rich Paul.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver made it clear he wants the decision soon, saying, “I would like him to make his announcement already, so he can finish the schedule. Because as you might imagine, the teams are calling us, the networks are calling us, and everybody wants to lock in the schedule. But it will influence how we set the schedule, how we set opening week, Christmas Day, etc,”
Draymond Green pushed back on that idea during his podcast, arguing that public pressure was not likely to move James any faster.
“If I'm a young guy, the first thing that I'm thinking is "Man, we have leverage, what can we do with that leverage? Hey NBA Players Association, there's leverage, what can you do with the leverage?"
That statement to me is deep... I am expecting decision sooner rather than later but trust me, that definitely didn't speed it up,” Green said.
Green’s point was straightforward: Silver may want the schedule finalized, but calling out the league’s longest-tenured player in public might not be the way to get there. Since Green is close friends with James, his read on the situation carries some weight.
For now, James is still weighing his options, and the league is left waiting on his timeline. Around the NBA, there’s a growing sense that this is a process that should be allowed to play out without outside pressure - because if anything, Silver’s comments may have made the wait even longer.
