Memphis - De’Anthony Melton's Electrifying Performance Highlights Warriors' Potential
In a thrilling moment for the Warriors, De’Anthony Melton showcased his explosive athleticism against the Pelicans, leaving fans buzzing. Catching a pass from Draymond Green, Melton accelerated past Dejounte Murray, leaving him in the dust, and soared over New Orleans center Karlo Matkovic for a jaw-dropping right-handed dunk. This highlight-reel moment brought back memories of his high-flying days with the Memphis Grizzlies.
Despite being just his second dunk of the season, it was a statement move, fueled by the intense on-court chatter. Melton's 28-point performance was the centerpiece of a near-comeback effort in a tight 113-109 loss. Yet, despite his standout performance, Melton found himself on the bench the following night in Memphis. The Warriors are taking a cautious approach with his minutes as he continues to recover from significant injuries-a back issue in the 2023-24 season and an ACL tear that limited his 2024-25 appearances.
Since his return in December, the Warriors have limited him to around 25 minutes per game and have avoided playing him in consecutive games. However, Coach Steve Kerr hinted that this might soon change, saying, “We’re getting deeper into the season and he’s feeling well.”
Melton is eager to contribute more consistently, especially with Steph Curry sidelined due to a knee injury. His on-ball scoring is something the Warriors desperately need, and he’s proven he can deliver, averaging 21 points in just 25 minutes over his last four games.
Standing at 6-foot-2, Melton defies expectations with his 63% shooting at the rim, showing he's still got the bounce post-ACL surgery. He ranks third on the team in drives per game, right behind heavyweights Jimmy Butler and Curry, despite playing fewer minutes.
While his 3-point shooting remains a work in progress at 29%, there's hope for improvement, as he's a career 36.1% shooter. If the Warriors' medical team gives him the green light, a fully unleashed Melton could be pivotal in their quest to move up from play-in territory.
