Celtics Eye Veteran Center After Wizards Matchup Victory

Boston Celtics to bolster their frontcourt depth by signing seasoned center Charles Bassey on a 10-day contract following their game against the Wizards.

The Boston Celtics are gearing up for their clash with the Washington Wizards, and they've reportedly made a strategic roster move. The team is set to bring in veteran center Charles Bassey on a short-term deal. If everything goes smoothly, Bassey will join the Celtics for a 10-game stint, kicking off after their Saturday matchup against Washington.

Bassey, known for his efficiency, has averaged 4.3 points on an impressive 63% shooting from the field, along with 4.3 rebounds in just over 11 minutes per game throughout his five combined NBA seasons with the Spurs, Grizzlies, and 76ers.

Recently, Bassey has been sharpening his skills in the NBA G League with the Santa Cruz Warriors, the affiliate of the Golden State Warriors. His journey began in 2021 when he was a second-round pick out of Western Kentucky, selected 53rd overall by the Philadelphia 76ers.

During his rookie season with the Sixers, Bassey saw action in 23 games, averaging 3.0 points in 7.3 minutes per game. Although the Sixers had him under contract for his sophomore preseason, they waived him before the regular season began. He then signed a two-way contract with the San Antonio Spurs, where he eventually secured a standard deal.

Bassey showed promise with the Spurs, but injuries hampered his progress. Over three years, he played in 90 games, posting averages of 4.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and nearly a block per game.

This past summer, Bassey joined the Celtics' Summer League roster. He had a brief stint with the Atlanta Hawks before the 2025-2026 NBA season but was waived at the end of the preseason. A 10-day deal with the Memphis Grizzlies followed in October, where he appeared in two games.

The 76ers recently brought Bassey back on multiple 10-day contracts, but he made just one appearance before returning to the Warriors. Now, as the Celtics face front-court injuries, Bassey is getting another opportunity to make an impact in Boston.
