The Los Angeles Lakers may have just watched the Jonathan Kuminga market tilt in their favor.
For much of the offseason, Cleveland looked like the main obstacle between the Lakers and the former Golden State Warriors wing. That changed on Sunday, when the Cavaliers addressed their wing rotation by signing Mario Hezonja to a one-year, $2.8 million deal. With that move, the Lakers suddenly look like the lone serious team left in the chase.
Kuminga is still expected to cost plenty. NBA reporter Evan Sidery said, “Jonathan Kuminga is demanding a salary in free agency exceeding $20 million annually, per The Athletic.
Kuminga prefers a sign-and-trade from the Hawks over leaving outright, simply due to the added financial implications. The Cavaliers and Lakers are the finalists for Kuminga,”
Cleveland’s addition of Hezonja matters because it changes the shape of the bidding. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported, “EuroLeague star Mario Hezonja has agreed to a one-year, $2.8 million deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers, agent Michael Tellem of Excel Sports Management told ESPN.
Hezonja -- the No. 5 pick in the 2015 draft -- receives an opportunity to revitalize his NBA career entering his sixth season in the league after last playing in 2019-20. He is set to play a key wing role for the Eastern Conference finalists,”
That opening has led NBA insider Brett Siegel to point toward Los Angeles as the team most likely to finish the job. “With Hezonja heading to Cleveland, that leaves one suitor for Jonathan Kuminga: The Los Angeles Lakers. I would expect a sign-and-trade involving Jarred Vanderbilt to be completed there with the Hawks,” Siegel wrote.
The Lakers have spent the offseason reshaping the roster around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, and Kuminga has been viewed as the kind of athletic wing they have been trying to add since LeBron James left at the start of free agency. The fit is obvious enough. The price, though, still has to work for everyone involved.
Atlanta remains a key piece of the puzzle, and the Hawks are not expected to part with Kuminga in a sign-and-trade unless they get real value back. Los Angeles has stayed aggressive in its pursuit, and after Cleveland’s latest move, the path to a deal looks much clearer than it did a day ago.
