Georgia Tech's Spring Practice: A Glimpse into the Future with Tristan Willis
In the heart of Atlanta, Georgia Tech is buzzing with activity as spring practices unfold. Brent Key and his Yellow Jackets staff are rolling out the red carpet for recruits from the class of 2027. Saturday was particularly eventful, with a host of promising players visiting campus, including standout running back Tristan Willis.
Hailing from C.E. King High School in Houston, Texas, the 5-foot-9, 195-pound Willis is making waves as a three-star recruit, ranked 88 overall and 78 in the Lone Star State. After his unofficial visit to The Flats, Willis shared his excitement about the experience.
"Man, it was amazing. They showed me so much love and why they wanted me," Willis expressed.
"I love the running back group they have, and I loved what Coach [Jimmy] Smith was going out there. It feels amazing when I'm there, and they're going to be one of my top schools, for sure."
Despite Coach Smith's recent arrival in January, his connection with Willis goes back to his days at TCU. This longstanding relationship is a key factor in Willis's consideration.
"That's my dog," Willis said about Smith. "We've grown tight and have a close bond.
He's a coach that I could see myself playing for. He doesn't just tell me what I want to hear.
He tells me what I need to work on and what kind of back I could be if I keep working and growing."
Willis is particularly intrigued by the new offensive scheme under George Godsey, which he believes suits his style perfectly. During his visit, he got a firsthand look at the intensity and passion that defines Georgia Tech's practices.
"It got me very amped up," he said. "I wanted to go out there and play!"
Looking ahead, Willis has set an official visit to Georgia Tech for June 20th. He's also planning visits to TCU on May 29th and Purdue on June 5th, with potential stops at Arizona, Arizona State, and Memphis. These schools are all contenders, but Willis is keeping his options open as he continues to engage with various programs.
His upcoming itinerary includes unofficial visits to TCU and Purdue. For Willis, finding the right fit goes beyond just football.
"I'm looking for a family, and then I need to see what the culture is like," he explained. "I don't want to go somewhere where I feel uncomfortable, and then I want competition inside the room.
I'm not running away from no room. No matter who is there and who they've got.
Then, I want a coach who pushes me."
As Georgia Tech's spring practices continue, the excitement around potential recruits like Willis adds a dynamic layer to the Yellow Jackets' future prospects.
