Georgia Tech’s start has been uneven, but a few names have stood out for the right reasons, and Tre Maddox is right at the top of that list.
Maddox has spent much of his football journey battling injuries that could have derailed him. Instead, he kept grinding, kept showing up, and kept putting in the work.
That persistence earned him a permanent team captain nod this summer, one of just four players to get that honor. It’s also showing up on Saturdays, where Georgia Tech has leaned on him in just about every way imaginable.
He’s been used as a runner, a receiver, a blocker, and on special teams, giving the Yellow Jackets a versatility piece that’s hard to replace. Against Stanford last time out, Maddox turned in the best game of his career, posting his first multi-touchdown performance.
He finished with six carries for 40 yards and a touchdown, along with four catches for 48 yards and another score. He was heavily involved in the first half and helped drive the team’s success.
" I mean, obviously he's the first guy named a permanent captain this summer. And I think people are seeing him why now, right?
You know, whether it's blocking, whether it's catching, whether it's running the ball, whether it's pass blocking, whether it's special teams, you know, playing on all special teams. I mean, just the tremendous, tremendous value to this football team.
He's a dude. He is.
I mean, a guy that works at it. I mean, it ain't easy.
I mean, think about the guys that play one position out there, right?
Or you hear coaches say, well, he's got to learn the playbook, got to learn what to do to get him out there at one singular position. This guy's playing really basically running back, fullback, tight end, wide receiver, and all four special teams, right, who also has been through as much adversity in his football career as anybody on our football team.
So just so, so proud of Tre. Such a huge role in us as a football team.
Another bright spot has been Penson, whose move from cornerback to wide receiver came with plenty of uncertainty. Georgia Tech had real questions about its receiver room entering the season, but Penson has helped answer them. He’s become a reliable target and a source of explosive plays, leading the team with 241 receiving yards and producing the longest catch of the season at 42 yards.
He still hasn’t scored his first career touchdown, but he’s been steady from game to game. Penson has gone for at least 50 receiving yards in every game he’s played this season and has also finished with at least 3+ catches in every game.
At 15.1 yards per catch, he’s been a big part of what’s made the passing game work. Georgia Tech’s next step is simple: get him the ball more.
On defense, the Colorado transfer Thomas has been one of the Yellow Jackets’ most dependable players in a season filled with struggles on that side of the ball. He leads the team with 25 tackles and has added two sacks, one pass defensed and one forced fumble. Thomas has also posted at least five tackles in every game this season, and he’s been especially strong against the run.
According to Pro Football Focus, Thomas owns a 91.3 run defense grade, best on the team, along with an 85.9 overall defensive grade. In a year when Georgia Tech has had to sort through plenty of transfer uncertainty, Thomas has made an immediate impact and given the program a clear win.

Georgia Tech goes into the bye week with more questions than answers after a 1-3 start that includes a loss to Stanford and a stretch defined by self-inflicted mistakes. Georgias Backfield Uncertainty Just Added Another Twist
Nate Fraziers status has become the latest moving piece in Georgias backfield picture, with Kirby Smart offering a fresh update after the running back was listed as questionable on the SEC injury report. Frazier did not take part fully in pregame warmups before Georgias recent game against Oklahoma, and his rib injury ultimately kept him out while the Bulldogs turned to other backs to carry the ground game.
For Georgia, it is another reminder that the backfield has not settled into a simple answer just yet. The SEC will keep requiring injury updates, so Fraziers availability figures to remain a watch point as the Bulldogs move forward and try to get more clarity on who can handle the load when it matters most. Georgia Tech Already Faces A Worrying Question About This Season
Georgia Tech went into its bye week carrying more than just a 1-3 record after Stanford came back to beat the Yellow Jackets 34-27, erasing a halftime lead that had briefly given the season a different feel. The loss added to a month that has been defined by uneven play on both sides of the ball, with the defense struggling to hold up against the run and create disruption, while the offense has had trouble consistently finishing drives and protecting the football.
There were a few encouraging signs, though, and quarterback Alberto Mendoza provided some of them despite the overall mess around him.
