Georgia coach Kirby Smart didn’t need long to recognize what got loose from his backyard.
Jadan Baugh, the Florida running back who came out of Columbia High School just outside Atlanta, was one of those prospects Smart saw early and remembered clearly. Smart said Wednesday that Baugh first showed up at Georgia camp as a ninth grader, originally working out at safety.
“I remember Jaden well,” Smart said. “I have a great relationship with him, his dad and his family.
He came as a 9th grader to camp and was playing safety. Everyone was raving about this 9th-grade safety.
I just remember this big, physical - for a 9th grader I thought: ‘Golly, what is this guy going to be?’”
What he became was a problem for just about everybody in the SEC. In 2026, Baugh has piled up 763 yards on 135 carries with 13 touchdowns, turning into exactly the kind of physical back Georgia hoped it might land.
Smart said Baugh kept coming back to Athens for recruiting camps, growing into a bigger and more versatile player each time.
“He grew and grew and came each year,” Smart said. “His junior year he was playing a lot of linebacker.
He went on a playoff run late in his senior year. He had an unbelievable run of running back stats - doing really incredible things.”
The recruiting path didn’t stay simple for long. Baugh was a consensus three-star back in the class of 2024.
He first committed to Arkansas in early 2023, then picked up an Alabama offer after the playoffs and before an official visit to Florida. He backed off his Arkansas pledge three days before signing with the Gators.
“I think we had two running back commits, and he went off on the playoff run and just blew up,” Smart said of that stretch.
Georgia did bring in three running backs that class: Chauncey Bowens, Nate Frazier and Dwight Phillips. Bowens has spent much of this season injured, while Frazier and Phillips have carried the load for the Bulldogs.
Still, Baugh is the one Smart knows slipped through. “He’s a really good player - one that got away for sure.”
And if Saturday turns into another one of those games, Georgia will have to deal with that miss head-on. Baugh has already faced the Bulldogs twice, running 32 times for 136 yards and a touchdown in those meetings.

Georgia Tech Gets An Early Read On Jackson Fields And Team Chemistry
Before the season even gets rolling, Jackson Fields is already giving Troy a useful early snapshot of where this group stands. Speaking to the media ahead of the opener, the veteran under Scott Cross sounded energized about getting back on the floor after time away, and he pointed to a roster that has spent the preseason sharpening its identity on the defensive end while trying to build the kind of chemistry that tends to matter once games start counting.
Fields also made clear that the Tigers are not just talking about togetherness in the abstract. He noted the growth he has seen from teammates Colby Garland and Kayden Allen, especially in the way they are handling defensive responsibilities and communicating with the group, which is the sort of progress that can quietly shape a teams ceiling. For Georgia Tech fans watching cross-sport storylines around the region, it is a reminder that Troy is trying to come into the year with more than just talent - it wants cohesion, too. [Read more 🡒]
Georgia Techs Upset Chances Ride On Slowing Pitts Biggest Threats
Georgia Tech heads into its matchup with Pittsburgh knowing the recent history is not on its side, with the Panthers having taken four of the last five meetings. The Yellow Jackets best path to an upset starts on defense, where slowing Pitts most dangerous playmakers will be essential if they want to make the game look different from the last few in the series.
The challenge begins with Pittsburghs ground game, where Damon Ferguson Jr. remains the player Georgia Tech has to account for even as his status is still up in the air. If the Jackets cant firm up against the run, they will also be forced to deal with a passing game that can stretch them in a hurry, while senior defensive back Brookins anchors a defense that has been tough to move and leads the Panthers in tackles. Atlanta Just Got Pulled Into Georgia Florida's Biggest New Tension
The Georgia-Florida rivalry is headed to Atlanta for the first time, and that alone gives this matchup a different kind of edge. ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit has already framed the conversation around Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton, saying he expects a cleaner performance after the turnovers that hurt the Bulldogs against Auburn, while Kirby Smart has pointed to Florida's offense as a group that can still make life difficult if it gets rolling.
Smart also singled out a familiar name on the other sideline in Jadan Baugh, a running back who gives Florida a physical option the Bulldogs have to account for. With the game landing in a new setting and both sides carrying their own pressure points into it, the buildup feels less like a routine rivalry week and more like the start of a fresh wrinkle in one of college football's oldest grudges.
