Georgia Tech’s offensive line room has a new charge to it, and Allen Mogridge is at the center of it.
Brent Key’s offseason decision to bring Mogridge back as the Yellow Jackets’ offensive line coach was a popular one, and the early returns have been about more than familiarity. Mogridge has brought an energy the linemen have already latched onto, and that matters as Georgia Tech moves through preseason work with a line that has a big job ahead of it: pave the way for an offense expected to lean on the run while also keeping a first-time starting quarterback upright.
The challenge starts inside, where Georgia Tech will roll out three new starters along the interior. Mogridge likes what he sees forming there and sees the group as a reflection of what Key wants in the program.
“We are interjecting guys that are of the mold of Coach Key and his ideals and what he wants.”
One of the changes comes with Malachi Carney, who has shifted from right tackle to right guard. Mogridge called him “a big powerful athlete,” a useful piece for a line trying to get more force at the point of attack.
Kevin Peay is another key part of the mix. Now in his second year in the program, he has spent time in the weight room building himself up. Mogridge said, “He understands the core values,” a sign of the trust Peay has earned.
The third interior starter is Alabama transfer Joe Ionata, giving the Jackets another fresh face in the middle of the line. Behind that group, Will Reed is providing depth at center.
For Mogridge, the bigger goal is clear: build quality depth and keep the room competitive. He described the group as hungry, and that’s exactly the kind of edge Georgia Tech is hoping to carry into the season.
