Georgia Tech’s weekly press conference offered a clear look at two areas that have helped shape the Yellow Jackets’ start: an offensive line trying to settle in through injuries, and a receiver room that can keep fresh bodies on the field.
On the line, the theme is simple. Georgia Tech has been forced to shuffle pieces because of injuries, and the response has been the same across the room: next man up. The rotation has put pressure on everyone involved, but the players say the group has embraced the responsibility.
“ I mean, that's definitely important but those guys we been rotating guys in so those guys know it's their time. So they know they got to uh pick up the standard that the standard that we have and I feel like those guys got those reps so they know what we wanted this game to do.
That mindset showed up against Mercer in the second half, when the Yellow Jackets’ line started to look more connected. One of the clearest moments came on a run by Justice Haynes, when Mercer defenders had him wrapped up and stopped his momentum. Rather than letting the play die there, Kevin Peay Jr. and Jordan Floyd kept driving and pushed the pile for another seven yards.
Peay Jr. said that kind of effort matters because it can create extra yardage and help protect the ball.
“ I feel like it does a lot. Definitely, following behind the ball carrier, just pushing, just in case, I mean a fumble anything just just fall in the ball carrier, get as many yards as we can get, and I felt like that was a great opportunity for us to show that we were working on emphasizing during practice a lot. So I feel like that's a great thing that we did.
If the offensive line is still building consistency, the receiver group appears to already have a useful edge: depth. Jaiven Plummer said Georgia Tech has enough options at wide receiver to keep from wearing out a small group of players, and that flexibility should matter as the season moves forward.
“We have a lot of depth and we're for sure going to stretch that out as the season continues starting, you know, Saturday. Um really we have a good amount of people in a group that can go so we're not tiring two one or two guys out too much. Um and that's where everybody else comes in as a group.
