Georgia Tech doesn’t need style points against Mercer so much as it needs proof of life.
An 0-2 start is hard enough on its own. Doing it after opening the season against two Power-Four opponents only makes the noise louder.
Now the Yellow Jackets head into Week 3 against an FCS Mercer team that, on paper, gives them a real chance to reset the tone. What Georgia Tech can’t afford is another flat showing.
The first two games have raised plenty of uncomfortable questions. Fans are already wondering about bowl eligibility, and the on-field issues have been easy to spot.
The offensive line hasn’t created room for Justice Haynes or the rest of the backs. It hasn’t kept Alberto Mendoza clean.
The defense hasn’t consistently stopped the run or gotten after the quarterback.
Even the numbers that look decent need some context. Georgia Tech technically sits at No. 20 in pass defense through two weeks, but Colorado and Tennessee haven’t had to lean heavily on the passing game because they’ve been able to run so effectively.
That’s why a convincing win over Mercer would matter. Not because it would solve everything, but because Georgia Tech badly needs to see something go right before ACC play begins.
Brent Key made clear this week that the Jackets’ problems go beyond one unit or one bad stretch. He pointed to the six factors he believes decide games, and Georgia Tech hasn’t been winning enough of them.
“They are explosive differentials. To us, pretty simple.
Points per possession, red zone touchdowns. So when you get in the red zone- not touchdowns, but when you get in the red zone- scoring touchdowns, third-down percentages, turnovers and takeaways, and then pressuring the quarterback.
Not sacks, but pressure. Are you able to get pressure on the opposing quarterback, and are you able to protect the quarterback in those situations?
So those are the six things. And when you look at those, those are...
And, you know, why have you not had the success you wanted? Okay, well, when you look at the situational aspect of it, those are the things we have to improve on.
Those are the things we have to get better at. Those are the things we have to be able to do.
Okay? So that's pretty black and white with where the game was,” said Key.
That’s the checklist Georgia Tech has to start attacking, and the offense in particular needs a cleaner start. Through two games, the Jackets have been one of the country’s least effective offenses, and Key has made no secret of where he wants improvement.
“Things we've got to improve on. You know, drive starters and first downs on offense.
I mean, big time. Big time.
You talk about why third down and get back on track, the second down and get back on track plays. Well, you wouldn't have those if you had more production and execution on first down.
You know, red area, I mean, two games now, three of seven scored in the red area, two touchdowns, one of them at the end of the game. That's something that is a major, major focus of being able to score touchdowns,” said Key.
There’s also a matchup problem Georgia Tech has to handle. Mercer has been one of the better rushing teams in the FCS, while the Yellow Jackets have been among the worst at stopping the run.
That’s the kind of wrinkle that can tell you something real about Georgia Tech’s defense. If it can’t hold up here, questions about the front seven are only going to get louder.
Still, the larger point is simple: this game is less about impressing anyone outside the building and more about building something inside it. A dominant result won’t erase the first two weeks, but it could give Georgia Tech some badly needed confidence before a critical two-game stretch against Stanford and Duke. Those games could end up shaping whether the Yellow Jackets can get back into the bowl picture.
A tight finish or a messy performance against Mercer would do the opposite. Georgia Tech needs Saturday to feel controlled from start to finish.
