Georgia Tech will take the field Saturday in a gold helmet, gold jersey and grey pants as it tries to get its season moving in the right direction against Mercer.
The Yellow Jackets are still searching for their first win after opening with losses to Colorado and Tennessee, and Brent Key’s group will be trying to show it can be more than the result of those first two games. Mercer comes in as one of the stronger FCS programs, but Georgia Tech knows it needs a win badly after starting 0-2.
That much is true even if beating an FCS opponent doesn’t magically fix everything. Still, with conference play ahead, the Yellow Jackets could use the confidence that comes from finally getting in the win column.
The biggest questions for Georgia Tech remain the same ones that have followed the team through two weeks. Up front, the offensive line has slipped after a rough start to the year, and that has to change if the Yellow Jackets want to be competitive in the ACC and get back to the postseason.
Availability on the line is also worth watching. In last Saturday’s game against Tennessee, left tackle Ethan Mackenny, center Jameson Riggs and right tackle Malachi Carney all left with injuries.
On Thursday, Key would not offer an update on whether any of them will be available against Mercer. If all three are sidelined, Markell Samuell, Jordan Floyd and Will Reed would be the likely replacements at those spots.
For Georgia Tech, the formula on offense is pretty clear: start fast, protect the quarterback and run the ball.
The defense has its own problems to clean up, beginning with the run game. Colorado rushed for 189 yards in the opener, then Tennessee piled up 299 last Saturday. The linebacker play has been shaky, and the Yellow Jackets still haven’t been able to generate much pressure on the quarterback.
With a long trip to Stanford next on the schedule, Georgia Tech would love nothing more than to use Saturday as a reset. A solid performance against Mercer could provide some momentum before a 10:30 kickoff against the Cardinal.

Georgia Tech heads into its meeting with Mercer trying to do more than simply get into the win column. After opening the season with two losses against strong opponents, the Yellow Jackets are looking at this week as a chance to clean up a list of issues that have already shown up on both sides of the ball, even if the opponent on paper gives them some room to breathe.
Brent Key has already laid out the areas that matter most, from points per possession and red-zone touchdowns to third-down efficiency, turnovers and pressure on the quarterback.
