Georgia Tech Heads Into Louisville With One Problem Still Looming

With Georgia Tech grappling with ongoing defensive woes and facing a daunting matchup against Louisville, ESPN's SP+ metrics foresee a decisive victory for the Cardinals.

Georgia Tech heads into Saturday’s matchup with Louisville carrying a three-game losing streak and the kind of season that has slipped badly off track. The Yellow Jackets are on pace for their worst year in the Brent Key era, and the issues have piled up in every direction: shaky coaching, missed assignments, an offense that hasn’t found consistency, and a defense that too often looks out of place.

That’s reflected in the numbers, too. Georgia Tech is a heavy underdog at home, and ESPN analyst Bill Connelly’s SP+ sees it the same way.

Connelly describes SP+ this way: "As always: SP+ is a tempo- and opponent-adjusted measure of college football efficiency. It is a predictive measure of the most sustainable and predictable aspects of football, not a résumé ranking."

His projection has Louisville winning 38-22, and he gives the Cardinals an 85% chance to come out on top.

There were a few signs of life from Georgia Tech last week. The Yellow Jackets forced three turnovers, their most since 2024, which at least gave the defense something to hang its hat on.

But the offense couldn’t cash in on those takeaways, and the broader problems were still there. Georgia Tech continues to struggle with lining up correctly and putting itself in position to make plays.

The run defense has been especially rough. Pittsburgh gashed the Yellow Jackets for 281 yards and three touchdowns, with missed tackles and poor angles showing up again and again. Brent Key addressed those issues directly when asked about them.

"Um, that's something that has been addressed, and something will continue to be addressed tomorrow. There weren't times when they were put out where they end up getting in position, but you know, when you're standing there not your cleats aren't set anchor down the defensive line.

You can't get any knockback. So then I look and see how much that led to other things.

But yeah, you're right. End of the day, get down, get a call, and get set play,” said Key.

For Georgia Tech, that has been the story all season: some encouraging moments, but not nearly enough consistency to stop the same defensive breakdowns from resurfacing every week. The Yellow Jackets will try again against Louisville, but the problems that have defined the year are still staring them in the face.

Georgia Techs Late Season Slide Is Raising Pressure Around Brent Key

Georgia Techs late-season stumble has turned a promising year into an anxious finish, with the loss to Pittsburgh adding another layer of pressure around Brent Keys program. The Yellow Jackets have now dropped three straight, and what once looked like a path toward a comfortable bowl berth has become a scramble to steady things before the schedule runs out.

Around the ACC, the weekend only sharpened the stakes. Pittsburgh clinched bowl eligibility with its win over Georgia Tech, while Syracuse kept its own postseason hopes alive by beating SMU and Clemson moved closer to qualifying with a win over Florida State. For the Yellow Jackets, the bigger concern is no longer what the conference race looks like around them, but whether they can avoid a finish that would leave them on the outside looking in. Georgia Tech Heads Into Clemson With One More Chance To Respond

Georgia Techs trip to Clemson arrives at a tricky moment, with the Yellow Jackets trying to steady themselves after a loss to Pittsburgh that extended their skid to three games. The problems have been familiar enough to worry about and broad enough to demand attention, especially in the run defense and on the offensive side, where the production has not matched the standard the program needs as the schedule tightens.

The next few weeks now carry extra weight, starting with a matchup against Clemson and then Louisville after that. Clemson has had an uneven season of its own, and Georgia Tech can still point to its edge in the all-time series as a reminder that this rivalry has not always gone the way the rankings suggest. What the Jackets need now is a response, even if the details of how they get there are still the part left to be sorted out. [Read more 🡒]

Georgia Tech Faces A Defining Choice As Louisville Comes To Atlanta

Georgia Tech heads into Saturday nights home date with Louisville carrying more than the usual ACC pressure. The Yellow Jackets have been searching for answers on both sides of the ball this season, and the offensive frustration has only sharpened the focus on what comes next as they try to steady things in Atlanta. The matchup is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on the ACC Network, but the bigger conversation around the program has been about how to get the offense moving again.

Alberto Mendozas recent struggles have put the quarterback situation under a brighter spotlight, and the staff is also looking at whether it should lean more heavily on younger players as it tries to balance the present with the future. Trae Stevenson Jr., Tae Harris and Josh Petty are among the names in that conversation, a sign that this stretch may be about more than just one game. For a team still trying to find traction, the decisions made this week could shape more than the Louisville result. [Read more 🡒]
