Georgia Tech Faces Homecoming Pressure After Another Costly Loss

Georgia Tech returns to the field as a narrow favorite in a pivotal homecoming clash against a surprisingly resilient Boston College team.

Georgia Tech heads into next Saturday’s homecoming game with a chance to steady itself after a frustrating trip to Virginia Tech, and oddsmakers are giving the Yellow Jackets a slight edge.

Brent Key’s team opened the week as a 4.5-point favorite over Boston College at FanDuel Sportsbook, with the over/under listed at 50.5. That sets up a game Georgia Tech badly needs after a sloppy showing on Saturday kept it from winning back-to-back games for the first time this season.

The Yellow Jackets had plenty of issues against Virginia Tech. They fell into a 24-3 hole in the first half, with defensive breakdowns and poor red-zone possessions putting them in catch-up mode early. Georgia Tech did manage to trim the deficit to seven points early in the second half, but it couldn’t keep the push going and ended up dropping to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the ACC.

Boston College comes to Atlanta after pulling off an upset of Pittsburgh on Saturday, and the Eagles have already shown they are better than the preseason expectations that had them near the bottom of the conference. Their only loss came against Virginia Tech in brutal weather, and they’ve also beaten Cincinnati, Rutgers and Maine.

That makes this matchup trickier than it might have looked in August. Boston College is getting production from former Division II quarterback Mason McKenzie, whose running ability adds a different layer to the offense. Georgia Tech’s defense has struggled throughout the season, and this is not the kind of quarterback-driven attack it has handled well so far.

There is also a bit of recent history in Georgia Tech’s favor. The Yellow Jackets snapped a three-game losing streak to the Eagles with a road win last November, and they’ll need something similar if they want to avoid another setback next Saturday. Former Georgia Tech coach Bill O'Brien is also returning to Atlanta with Boston College.

One other wrinkle: Georgia Tech has not taken advantage when it has been favored against FBS teams this season. It lost to both Colorado and Stanford in those spots, and now it has to prove it can close the deal again in front of a homecoming crowd.

The issues are plain enough. Turnovers, missed field goals, and explosive plays allowed on defense have kept dragging Georgia Tech down. If those problems show up again, Boston College is more than capable of making the Jackets pay.

Georgia Just Landed Another Huge Tennessee Flip

Georgia continued to pad its 2027 recruiting class with a pair of additions that speak to both depth and upside, headlined by a highly regarded junior college defensive lineman and an in-state safety with production on both sides of the ball. The class already includes cornerback Nash Johnson, and these latest commitments give the Bulldogs more traction in the kind of early-cycle recruiting battle that can shape a class before it fully takes form.

One of the biggest wins came on the defensive front, where Christian Mays brings the profile of a high-end interior lineman after previously being tied to Tennessee. Georgia also went back into its own backyard to secure Braylon Miller, who made his decision after an official visit and gives the Bulldogs another versatile defensive back to work with as the class grows. Georgia Tech Needs One Offensive Fix Before Boston College

Georgia Tech heads into its ACC matchup with Boston College looking for a cleaner version of the offense that has surfaced at times since Haynes King went down. Brent Key has made it clear the Yellow Jackets need sharper execution, especially once they get inside the red zone, where stalled drives have become too familiar. The bigger picture is simple enough: if Tech can turn more of those trips into points, it gives a defense and an offense still working through inconsistency a better chance to settle in.

A healthier backfield could help make that happen, and the possibility of Kings return gives the group a different kind of edge. His presence would matter not just for what he brings as a runner, but for how it changes the way the rest of the offense fits together alongside Trelain Maddox. For a Tech team trying to clean up the details Brent Key keeps pointing to, the timing of that boost could make all the difference against Boston College. [Read more 🡒]

Georgia Tech Finally Found Something On Offense But One Problem Remains

For a few stretches against Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech at least looked like it had found a workable offensive identity. Mendoza put together the best passing day of his career, and Allen was a steady outlet throughout the afternoon, piling up 10 catches and more than 100 receiving yards as the Yellow Jackets moved the ball better than they have in some recent outings.

The problem was everything around those flashes. Georgia Tech still lost 34-24 to fall to 2-4, and the mistakes kept undercutting any momentum the offense built. The defense had its own inconsistency to sort through, and the Jackets also left points on the field in a game they could not afford to waste opportunities, which is why the progress on offense came with such an uneasy feeling attached to it.
