Georgia Tech Faces An Early ACC Gut Check Against Duke

Can Georgia Tech overcome their injury woes and maintain their winning streak against a formidable Duke team in their Week Six home game?

Georgia Tech is back from its bye week with a tricky one waiting next Saturday on The Flats. Duke comes in at 4-0 overall and 1-0 in ACC play, and the Blue Devils will arrive as the favorites.

The early number has Georgia Tech as a 6.5-point underdog at FanDuel Sportsbook, with the over/under set at 49.5. That sets up a tough ask for the Yellow Jackets, especially with the way both teams have looked through the first part of the season.

Health may be the biggest thing to monitor before kickoff. Georgia Tech has been dealing with issues up front, with LT Ethan Mackenny and C Jameson Riggs out last game against Stanford.

The injury list stretched even further on defense, where DE Jordan Walker, LB Kyle Efford, CB Jaylen Mbakwe, and safety Savion Riley all missed the Stanford game. Starting cornerback Daiquan White also got hurt during the game.

If those absences linger, the margin for error gets even smaller.

Stanford is the shared reference point here, but the two results tell very different stories. Georgia Tech led Stanford 20-10 at halftime before the game slipped away in a 34-27 loss, with the defense unable to get the stop it needed. Duke had the opposite kind of afternoon, rolling past Stanford 35-7 for what remains its first and only ACC win so far this season.

That Blue Devils team has also been getting big-time play from running back Nate Sheppard, who has been one of the nation’s best to this point. Add in a defense under Manny Diaz that has been aggressive and disruptive, and Georgia Tech is facing a real test on both sides of the ball.

There is, though, one note that should give the Yellow Jackets confidence. Brent Key is 2-0 against Manny Diaz since Diaz took over at Duke, and Key is 3-0 overall against the Blue Devils. Georgia Tech has also won five straight in the series.

Now the question is whether that run can keep going, or whether Duke walks into Atlanta and ends it.

Georgia Tech Returns To An ACC Race That Still Feels Wide Open

The ACC picture remains unsettled after another weekend of results that shuffled the league without really clarifying it. Miami has looked every bit like the conferences standard-bearer, but behind the Hurricanes there is still plenty of traffic, with teams like Clemson, Louisville, Virginia and Georgia Tech all trying to find enough consistency to stay in the race as the schedule tightens.

For the Yellow Jackets, that matters because the opening is still there even as other programs deal with injuries, uneven play and the kind of missed chances that have defined the league so far. Pitt has already lost quarterback Mason Heintschel for the season, Stanford and Florida State are still searching for answers, and the next stretch of games will go a long way toward showing which teams are real contenders and which ones are simply hanging around in a conference that has yet to sort itself out. Georgia Tech's Remaining Path Looks Worse Than Fans Expected

Georgia Tech enters its week-five break at 1-3, and the off week may offer more of a reset than a reprieve. The Yellow Jackets have already dug a hole, and the rest of the schedule has not opened up the way some fans might have hoped when the season began.

ESPNs Football Power Index is painting a bleak picture from here, projecting only a low chance of success over the final eight games and a finish that could land at 2-10. The path back starts with a difficult one, too, with undefeated Duke waiting next, and the broader slate has already shown enough mixed results to keep little comfort in sight. [Read more 🡒]

Georgia And Alabama Are Fueling A Debate Georgia Tech Fans Should Watch

Paul Finebaum had plenty to celebrate after Alabamas 56-23 win over Mississippi State, pointing to a defense that kept quarterback Kamario Taylor in check while the Crimson Tide turned every red-zone trip into points. The performance only added to the sense that Alabama is gathering momentum again, especially after setting an SEC home mark for points against a ranked opponent.

Across the league, ESPN analyst Heather Dinich is making a different case, labeling Georgia the SECs most complete team based on the numbers and its offensive efficiency. With Alabama looming on Georgias schedule, the discussion is now about how the two powers stack up, and whether that matchup will settle which program is best positioned as the conference race tightens.
