Georgia Tech’s trip to Blacksburg turns into a trench war fast.
Saturday’s matchup with Virginia Tech is built around a few clear pressure points, and the Yellow Jackets will need to win them if they want to leave Lane Stadium with their second conference victory. The Hokies have been excellent against the run, sitting No. 14 nationally in rushing defense and allowing only 85.5 rushing yards per game. Georgia Tech, meanwhile, ranks 117th in rushing at 183 yards per game.
That number doesn’t tell the full story, though. The Yellow Jackets’ ground game has picked up lately despite a battered offensive line, and the run game has been more balanced with Justice Haynes and Trelain Maddox carrying the load.
Haynes is listed as doubtful for this one, which makes Maddox even more important after back-to-back multi-touchdown performances. The test gets much tougher against Virginia Tech’s front seven, where Noah Chambers and Keon Wylie lead a group that has made life miserable for opposing offenses.
The Hokies don’t just stop the run - they hunt quarterbacks too. Virginia Tech is tied for 10th nationally with 19 sacks, a sign of how disruptive this defense can be when it’s firing on all cylinders. Corbo made it clear he knows the challenge ahead.
“Yeah, it's going to be fun to go up there and play first of all, but um you know, they're an aggressive defense. They're tough.
You know, they make a lot of plays. They move a lot.
They fly to football. So, it's going to be a good test for us, but I'm excited.
I think there's a lot of things that we're going to do that, you know, is going to be successful for us. And it's going to be a battle.
But, um you know, they're a good defense. They do a lot of things well.
They got a lot of good players over there. So, um you know, excited to go up against them,” said Corbo.
The flip side is Georgia Tech’s pass rush, or lack of one. The Yellow Jackets have managed just six sacks this season, which ties them for 117th in the country.
That’s been a major disappointment after the offseason overhaul on the defensive line, where the staff brought in portal additions and a new recruiting class hoping for a real jump. It still hasn’t come together, and this game offers one of the better chances to change that.
Virginia Tech has also had issues protecting its quarterback. The Hokies are tied for 105th in sacks allowed with 14, an average of 2.33 per game.
That opens the door for Georgia Tech’s front to finally make some noise, especially against Ethan Grunkmeyer and an offensive line that looks vulnerable. If the Jackets are going to cash in anywhere, this is the spot.
The quarterback matchup adds another layer. Both Grunkmeyer and Alberto Mendoza arrived from former Big Ten programs in search of new opportunities in the ACC.
Grunkmeyer came from Penn State and has been efficient for Virginia Tech, completing 73.4% of his passes for 1,734 yards and 12 touchdowns. Mendoza transferred from Indiana and has thrown for 1,193 yards, seven touchdowns, and three interceptions while completing 69.9% of his passes.
The numbers point to a tight battle between two accurate, careful passers. Neither quarterback has been careless with the ball, and both have done enough to keep their teams in games. On Saturday, the one who executes cleaner is likely to be the one walking off with the win.

Georgia Tech Faces A Familiar Problem Entering Virginia Tech Game
Georgia Tech is heading into its Week 7 matchup with Virginia Tech carrying the kind of injury uncertainty that has started to feel familiar this fall. The Yellow Jackets report features several notable absences, including offensive linemen Ethan Mackenny and Markell Samuel, along with Malachi Hosley and starting cornerback Daiquan White, while Noah Carter is expected back. For a team trying to settle into a rhythm, the availability picture matters on both sides of the ball, especially up front.
The depth chart could also get thinner if Haynes is unable to go, leaving another position group in question as Saturday approaches. And in a longer-term development for the program, Kyle Efford has medically retired because of injuries, a reminder that the roster turnover around the season is not only about game-day status but also about careers interrupted by health issues. Georgia Techs Bowl Push Faces A Bigger Test Than Duke
Georgia Tech got the result it needed against Duke, its first Power Four win since Nov. 15, 2025, and the performance offered a glimpse of a more balanced attack. The run game was steadier, the offense found ways to finish drives and the win kept the Yellow Jackets moving in the right direction as they try to stay in the bowl conversation.
The challenge ahead looks tougher in a different way. Virginia Tech brings a more complete offensive test, with quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer steering the unit and a capable running back duo behind him, while Georgia Tech still has real issues to clean up on the other side of the ball. Third downs have been a trouble spot and the Jackets have yet to come up with a turnover this season, leaving little margin for error as the schedule tightens. [Read more 🡒]
Georgia Tech Brings New Swagger Into A Suddenly Winnable Virginia Tech Game
Georgia Tech is carrying a little more confidence into its ACC matchup with Virginia Tech after the upset of Duke, and the timing feels important for a program trying to turn a good win into something more lasting. The Jackets also signaled a fresh look for the road trip, unveiling a uniform combination that fits the moment and adds to the sense that this is a team trying to show up with some edge.
Brent Key did not dismiss what Virginia Tech can still do, even with the Hokies coming off recent losses. In talking to the media, he pointed to the strength of Virginia Techs coaching staff and singled out the Hokies' tight ends and quarterback as major concerns, which is a reminder that Georgia Tech cannot treat this as a simple follow-up to its Duke breakthrough. The setup is there for the Jackets to make another statement, but the test is whether that new swagger holds up once the game starts. [Read more 🡒]
