Georgia Tech had a first half it could live with and then watched the game slip away in a hurry.
The Yellow Jackets scored on both of their first-quarter possessions, jumped out with an opening-drive touchdown for the second straight home game, and carried a 13-12 lead into halftime against Boston College. After that, the picture turned ugly fast. Boston College ripped off 37 second-half points and left Georgia Tech with a 49-27 home loss in a game that carried real weight for the Jackets’ bowl hopes.
There were still a few bright spots to pull out of the wreckage. Kevin Roche Jr. caught the first touchdown of his career, giving Georgia Tech one of its early punches.
Grady Adamson also gave the offense a lift in the fourth quarter, going 7-for-9 for 73 yards and a touchdown, including a scoring throw to Dalen Penson. Penson finished with five catches for 88 yards, both a career high in yardage and a touchdown to match.
Josh Petty returned and made a solid impact in just 27 snaps, while Bo Maccormack had 65 rushing yards in the first quarter alone on six carries.
But the list of problems grew much longer once Boston College settled in. The Eagles averaged 8.6 yards per carry in the first half, then kept leaning on the same play in the second half while Georgia Tech never found the answer.
Boston College finished with 399 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the ground, and Mason McKenzie did major damage with 170 yards and two scores. Bo MacCormack added 155 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
Georgia Tech’s offense couldn’t keep pace. The Jackets managed only 101 rushing yards, averaged 3.6 yards per carry, and never got much push from the offensive line.
There was no real room to run, and penalties kept killing momentum after some of the bigger plays. Justice Haynes and Trelain Maddox were held to just 2.3 yards per carry in the first half.
The third quarter was especially rough. Georgia Tech came out of it with only three first downs and just three completions, and the offense couldn’t change the tempo of the game. On third down, the Jackets were 2-for-11.
Boston College also kept cashing in once it got close to the goal line, going 6-for-7 in the red zone. By the end, the Eagles’ 500 total yards, 399 rushing yards, and 49 points were all season highs against Georgia Tech.
The second-half collapse left little doubt about the biggest issue. Georgia Tech surrendered 37 points after halftime, and the defense, now under more scrutiny than ever, had no answers.

Georgia Tech Just Reignited A Debate Brent Key Could Not Avoid
Georgia Techs loss to Boston College turned into more than just a rough afternoon on the scoreboard. The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 10-0 lead, only to watch the game swing hard the other way in a 49-27 defeat that left the defense searching for answers after allowing the Eagles to control the ground game and seize momentum for most of the day.
Brent Key pointed to the familiar frustrations afterward, saying Boston College was able to keep leaning on the same concepts and make them work. With 16 players unavailable because of injuries, Georgia Tech was already stretched thin, but the bigger issue was how quickly the game slipped away after that early burst, reigniting the kind of defensive conversation no coach wants to keep revisiting this late in the season. Georgia Tech Heads To Pitt With More On The Line Than Expected
Georgia Tech heads to Pittsburgh next Saturday with a little more urgency than it might have expected after falling to Boston College and slipping to 2-5. The Yellow Jackets will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2, and oddsmakers already have them in a tough spot as a road underdog in a game that suddenly carries some weight for both teams.
Pitt enters the matchup having dropped three straight, so this is not exactly a straightforward rebound spot for either side. Even with the Panthers scuffling, the trip still looks like a tricky one for Georgia Tech, which needs to steady itself quickly if it wants to keep its season from sliding further. [Read more 🡒]
Georgia Techs Promising Season Is Suddenly Slipping Away Fast
Georgia Techs recent slide has turned a once-promising season into a scramble, and the home loss to Boston College only deepened the concern. Around the ACC, the latest week brought a swirl of results that shifted bowl pictures in a hurry, from NC States loss to Stanford to Syracuse, Virginia, Pittsburgh and Duke each dealing with games that carried major postseason implications.
For the Yellow Jackets, the bigger worry is how little margin they now have left to work with as the season enters its stretch run. Brent Keys team has to reverse the trend quickly if it wants to keep any realistic path to the postseason alive, but the conference landscape keeps getting more complicated, and Georgia Techs own setbacks are beginning to look increasingly hard to overcome.
