Georgia’s path back to the College Football Playoff in 2026 will run through a lot of familiar names, but one of the most important pieces might be the one drawing the least attention. Elijah Griffin is headed into his second season in Athens, and the Bulldogs are going to need him to take a real leap.
That’s because Georgia’s ceiling this fall won’t just be tied to the obvious headliners like quarterback Gunner Stockton and safety KJ Bolden. The offensive line will matter too. But Griffin has a chance to be even more central to what the Bulldogs become in 2026, especially with the way Georgia has traditionally leaned on its defensive front to set the tone.
His freshman season gave plenty of reason to believe that kind of jump is coming. Griffin finished with 22 total tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble, and now the expectation is that his role on the interior defensive line grows significantly. For a Georgia defense that has long been built around winning up front, that matters.
The concern is obvious: last season, Georgia was one of the worst teams in the SEC at sacking the quarterback, and that inconsistency showed up in the defense’s overall production at times. Griffin may not be asked to pile up sacks himself, but his ability to “win now” and disrupt the interior of the offensive line could be a major factor in whether the Bulldogs get consistent pressure.
If Griffin makes that next step and becomes one of the SEC’s more dominant interior defensive linemen, Georgia’s defense has a chance to be among the best in the country again. And if that happens, the Bulldogs will put themselves in strong position to chase another national title under Kirby Smart.
Georgia opens its 2026 season on Saturday, September 5th, hosting Tennessee State. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. on SEC Network+.
