Colorado’s Week 1 reveal already has a little Deion Sanders DNA baked into it.
A photo posted by Well Off Forever showed black and gold Nike cleats and sparked the obvious question: “Colorado Week 1 cleats?” With the Buffaloes set to open at Georgia Tech, the timing made the post land like a quiet pregame flex rather than a random offseason tease.
The shoes fit into a much bigger pattern Colorado has built around Sanders’ signature line. These are tied to the Air Diamond Turf family, the Nike series connected to his playing career, and Colorado has spent the offseason showing off player-exclusive versions in black, white, and gold.
They’re not just standard retail cleats dressed up in school colors. They’re Colorado-specific takes built around Sanders’ shoes.
That rollout has been going on for months. In January, Sanders previewed a sheet of possible Air Diamond Turf II player exclusives with about 20 different Colorado color combinations.
Then in May, he displayed a wider group alongside the Buffaloes’ potential uniform looks. By early August, another wave surfaced, including black and gold versions of the original Air Diamond Turf and the Air Diamond Turf II.
The current Nike Diamond Turf 2 football cleat keeps the retro look Sanders made famous, but it’s built on a modern football plate. That matters because the Colorado versions are player exclusives, giving the program a direct link to Sanders’ Nike history instead of a simple retail repaint.
Colorado has leaned into that connection since Sanders arrived in Boulder. Nike first supplied retro-inspired cleats from his line soon after his arrival, and three years later the program now has enough Colorado-only options to pair with different uniform combinations throughout the season.
The cleats may be equipment first, but they also serve a bigger purpose. In just a few seconds on social media, a reveal like this gives players, fans and recruits something that points straight back to the figure who has shaped Colorado’s identity since 2023.
That matters even more this year. Colorado has rebuilt the roster again and enters year four without Shedeur Sanders or Travis Hunter. Deion Sanders is still the face of the program, so anything tied to his playing career naturally becomes part of how the Buffaloes present themselves.
There’s also a neat Atlanta connection. Sanders signed with Nike in 1992 while playing for the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta Braves, and now more than 30 years later his Colorado team could open a season in the same city wearing a team-only version of his signature line.
Thursday gives the shoes a national stage. Georgia Tech has called for a whiteout at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field, and the opener kicks off at 8 p.m.
ET on ESPN. If the black and gold pair shown in the Well Off clip is the Week 1 choice, it should stand out clearly against all that white.
Sanders has long treated appearance as part of the game. In an older interview that Colorado On SI revisited this year, he put it plainly:
