A fake Todd Gurley quote has been making the rounds online this weekend, and plenty of people fell for it.
The post claims the former Georgia star said a booster handed him $100,000 after he tore his ACL against Auburn in 2014. It’s not real.
The quote isn’t authentic, the report isn’t authentic, and the whole thing comes from No3 Sports, a satire account that is known for putting out fake stories. The post also pins the quote on a Pete Nakos knockoff, “Pete Nokos.”
Even with that in plain sight, the reaction online was immediate. Some users treated it like a real admission and responded accordingly.
“Why would you say this publicly lol?” one person asked.
Another wrote, “SEC has always cheated but nobody cared.”
A third user focused on the detail in the fake quote itself: “The funniest part is him specifying it was the most cash he’d ever seen like the hug didn’t already make that clear.”
Others used the post to take a shot at the current state of college football. “Hahaha this is why the SEC complaining now that EVERYONE gets paid is hilarious.
Harder to compete on a level playing field!” one comment read.
Not everyone was fooled, though. One fan recognized the setup immediately and laughed, “No3 always cooking because these are always so believable😂,”
That’s really the story here: a satire account posted a believable enough fake, people ran with it, and once again the internet proved it will believe almost anything if you dress it up with a nice photo.
