A reunion between Stetson Bennett and Todd Monken in Cleveland would make a lot of sense, and the idea starts with Bennett’s uncertain place in Los Angeles.
Bennett is in the final year of his contract with the Rams, and there has been talk all through training camp that he may not be with the team by season’s end. The Rams have already said they won’t cut him, but a trade remains possible.
That opens the door for a few teams, and the Browns stand out because they could give Bennett a familiar face on the sideline. Monken, who was Bennett’s offensive coordinator at Georgia, is now Cleveland’s head coach. Bennett won two national championships with Monken guiding the offense, and that connection is hard to ignore.
The Rams may also have a reason to consider moving him. Bennett has not officially locked up the backup quarterback job in LA, though that appears to be where things are headed. At the same time, the team used a first-round pick on Ty Simpson in the 2026 NFL Draft, which makes Bennett look more like a short-term piece than a long-term answer.
If the Rams do not want to let him sit all season before he hits free agency next offseason, a trade could bring back something in return. Cleveland could be the right partner.
The Browns just named Deshaun Watson their starting quarterback for the upcoming season, only days after fans boo’d him off the field. Their backup, Shedeur Sanders, also hasn’t done anything to prove he belongs on an NFL field during the regular season either.
Bennett, meanwhile, has impressed whenever he has gotten onto the field in preseason play. He still has not had a regular-season chance, but plenty of fans and analysts believe he has shown enough to earn one.
There are other teams that could take a look, but Cleveland checks a lot of boxes. Monken already knows how to win with Bennett, and Georgia fans have plenty of reason to believe in that pairing. They remember both Bennett and Monken from those two title runs, and the idea of seeing them together again in the NFL would be easy for them to embrace.
For now, though, the Rams would have to be willing to deal him. If they trust Simpson enough to spend a first-round pick on him, then keeping him as the backup should be an option.
If not, moving Bennett during the season would make sense. Some Georgia fans would rather see him end up in Atlanta, but if that doesn’t happen, Cleveland would be a strong fallback.
