The Rams have finally settled their backup quarterback situation, and the job belongs to Stetson Bennett.

Both quarterbacks got real chances to prove themselves in training camp and across the Rams’ three preseason games, but when it came time to make the call before Thursday’s season opener, the Rams went with Bennett.

After that, the Rams sat him in the final preseason game, which was a pretty strong signal about where things were headed. He also had the advantage in practice throughout camp, taking reps before Simpson and even getting work with the first team, while Simpson never did.
That didn’t stop Simpson from having moments during camp, but Bennett kept doing enough to stay in front. It’s the kind of outcome Bennett has made a habit of pulling off. He’s been doubted before, and once again he wound up on top.
Even with the backup job now in his hands, nothing is locked in beyond this season. Bennett will have to keep proving himself if he wants to hold the role all year, because the Rams could still decide to shift back to Simpson at some point.
And the bigger decision is still ahead. Bennett’s contract expires after this season, while Simpson has three years left on his deal.
That gives the Rams a real choice next offseason: bring Bennett back, or move forward with Simpson. Which way they lean will depend on what happens this year.
If Bennett separates himself, the Rams may feel forced to keep him. If Simpson closes the gap or passes him, Bennett’s run in Los Angeles could be over.
For now, though, Bennett’s focus is simple: stay ready. He’s one snap away from regular-season action for the first time in his career, and if that chance comes, he’ll need to make it count.
